Appearance
Gnolls are wolf- or dog-headed humanoids with claws, sharp maws, and bodies broadly comparable in stature to humans. Their appearance causes many humans to regard them as beasts rather than people. 15 20
- Wolf-like heads and blood-stained maws are prominent identifying features. 15 16
- Gnolls possess sturdy bodies and considerable physical strength relative to ordinary humans. 30
- Individual Gnolls can be exceptionally large; Blackpaw Champion Tagg is described as eight feet tall. 37
- Their natural claws can retain visible elemental energy when wielded by a shaman. 18
Society and Culture
Gnolls possess their own languages, simple cultures, and customs. Human expansion pushed many Gnoll groups from settled areas into remote wilderness, where they generally organized themselves into loose tribes. 17
- Few Gnolls speak Common, creating a major obstacle to communication with humans. 16
- Historical accounts characterize Gnoll tribes as strength-based societies, in which the strongest warriors become leaders and the weak elderly may be treated as reserve food. 17
- The captured Gnolls encountered in Andorhal complicated that image: healthier Gnolls formed a protective circle around several elders, suggesting those elders held unusual status. 17
- The Blackpaw Gnolls demonstrated an ability to adapt after joining Lordaeron, using human-provided tools, constructing a fortified camp, and valuing improved food and equipment. 31
- Gnolls are commonly viewed by human society as savage raiders and “upright beasts,” a prejudice rooted in recurring conflicts over supplies and territory. 20
Abilities & Skills
Physical Combat
Gnolls are born warriors with strong, durable bodies, but human commanders consider most tribes poorly trained and lacking tactical discipline in large-scale warfare. 16 30
- Can form shield-bearing assault ranks when equipped and directed by human forces. 36
- Their physical resilience made captured Gnolls valuable—but expendable—to Lordaeron’s commanders during the Zul'Aman campaign. 35 39
- Poor discipline and the potential to disrupt allied formations limited their acceptance as conventional human soldiers. 30
Wilderness Scouting
Gnolls accustomed to forests and wilderness can operate effectively as scouts and raiders in familiar terrain. 31 33
- Blackpaw warriors scouted Zul'Aman and harassed nearby Troll settlements before Lordaeron’s full offensive. 31 33
- Their local knowledge was considered a major advantage for the human army in forest warfare. 33
Elemental Shamanism
Some Gnolls, such as Logul of the Maw-Claw Clan, can communicate with elemental forces and wield destructive magic. 18 19
- A Gnoll shaman electrocuted a Goblin merchant with elemental lightning. 18
- Logul used Shockwave to disrupt Troll Warlord Hamia’s attack and save Tagg from a killing blow. 37
- Oaths sworn by Gnoll shamans in the name of the Elemental Spirits are regarded as serious commitments. 19
Equipment and Construction
- Traditional Gnoll armament included wooden sticks and stones. 33
- The Blackpaw Clan built a log-walled camp with double wooden walls and arrow towers using local materials and tools supplied by humans. 31
- More than 5,000 Blackpaw Gnolls received salvaged iron weapons after proving useful to Lordaeron. 35
- During the assault on Zul'Aman, Gnoll units carried crude iron swords, wooden spears, and massive rope-bound shields made from stripped tree trunks. 36
- Redpine and Mudsnout captives were initially kept unarmed; Lordaeron intended to issue them only crude wooden shields and javelins immediately before battle. 35
Background and History
Gnolls from the Alterac Mountains were captured by a Goblin caravan and displayed for sale as slaves in Andorhal. The captives were wounded, underfed, and difficult to sell because of their inability to speak Common, their reputation for savagery, and their poor condition. 16 18
When a Goblin merchant threatened to sell the captives to a slaughterhouse, the aged shaman Logul broke free and killed him with elemental lightning. After recognizing Prince Alvin Menethil’s status, Logul abandoned a possible escape attempt and instead offered the complete loyalty of his Maw-Claw kin, swearing by the Elemental Spirits. 18 19
Alvin considered using Gnolls as guides and auxiliaries for Lordaeron, despite the political danger of accepting the allegiance of a people widely hated by humans. Logul was later associated with the Blackpaw Gnolls, where he led younger members in rebelling against the elders and defecting to the humans. 20 22 29
The Blackpaw Clan established a camp near Northland Fortress and sought to prove its value through reconnaissance against Zul'Aman. Logul secured Alvin’s promise that Gnolls who demonstrated loyalty could eventually receive land on a new continent. 31 33
During Lordaeron’s campaign against the Mossflayer Trolls, Blackpaw Gnolls served as scouts and armed fighters, while Redpine and Mudsnout captives were used as tightly controlled cannon fodder. Their losses materially reduced human casualties, though most human soldiers continued to view them as expendable beasts rather than comrades. 35 36 39
Later, Blackpaw Gnolls and Mossflayer Trolls operated a hidden reconnaissance camp in the Ghostlands, indicating a shift from their earlier conflict at Zul'Aman. 74
