Formation

After the fall of Stormwind City, Anduin Lothar appealed to the rulers of Lordaeron to unite against the Orcs, arguing that humanity faced either victory or extinction. The urgency increased with reports that Ironforge was under siege and Menethil Harbor had fallen. 44

King Terenas convened the council and guided its decision. Under Archbishop Alonsus Faol's witness, the assembled leaders formed an alliance “in the name of Arathor,” pledging to advance, retreat, live, and die together. 44

War Against the Horde

Southshore became the Alliance's temporary command center as forces from its member states, the Order of the Silver Hand, and High Elf reinforcements gathered for mobilization. 48

The Alliance initially planned to deny the Horde a port in the Hillsbrad Foothills and sever its supply lines through Kul Tiras naval control, supported by Wildhammer gryphon riders and Lordaeron supplies. 48 52

Its first major naval victory nearly annihilated the Orc fleet, but cost roughly half of the Alliance navy and nearly one-fifth of the Dwarf gryphon riders killed or wounded. 55 Despite this, several thousand Orcs later landed undetected on Lordaeron, forcing Lothar to place Alliance forces in Hillsbrad on high alert and reinforce the Wall of Thoradin. 61

When Grom Hellscream's forces broke through the coastal defenses and landed in Hillsbrad, the Alliance abandoned its initial containment strategy and adopted a defensive plan intended to starve the Horde in the foothills. 77

Command and Strategy

• Supreme Commander: Anduin Lothar directed Alliance-wide deployments, naval operations, and the defense of the Hillsbrad Foothills and Arathi Highlands. 55 61
• Primary command center: Southshore served as the temporary headquarters during the early campaign; it was later relocated toward the Arathi Highlands as the Thandol Span came under threat. 48 62
• Core military strength: The Alliance relied chiefly on Lordaeron and Stromgarde land forces, Kul Tiras's navy, and Wildhammer aerial units. 49 52
• Logistical measures: Lordaeron's grain stores in Stratholme, Andorhal, and the capital were sufficient to supply Alliance soldiers for years; the kingdom also bore most of the cost of relocating Hillsbrad civilians. 49

• High Elves of Quel'Thalas — Initially sent only Alleria Windrunner's limited ranger force and twelve ships rather than fully joining the Alliance. 48
