Aegwynn had once spent considerable time poring over ancient texts in Dire Maul, creating Reversal Magic, which could reverse the effects of certain dark spells. She had developed it specifically for Onyxia's dark magic and the two Varians.
According to Aegwynn's plan, as long as both Varians were present when Onyxia cast that unfinished dark spell on Varian Wrynn, she could cast her own spell to reverse its effects, merging the two Varians into one.
She had not done so back at Stormwind Keep for two reasons. First, both Varians had been quite satisfied with their current state. Second, Onyxia had been ambushed by everyone there and gravely wounded before she could cast that dark spell, then fled.
Now, however, the time was right.
Whether the two Varians wanted it or not, Aegwynn had to cast the spell she had created. There was no other way to stop Onyxia from killing Brave Varian.
This was a dark spell Onyxia had secretly spent a long time preparing. Clearly, she had anticipated the arrival of Varian Wrynn and the others and had been waiting for this moment.
