Background / History

Infiltration of Stormwind

Deathwing dispatched his only daughter to infiltrate Stormwind’s upper ranks. Assuming the identity of Katrana Prestor, Onyxia manipulated the nobles into withholding the Mason Guild’s reconstruction wages. The ensuing conflict drove Edwin VanCleef and many masons into the Defias Brotherhood. Shawn identifies her as the underlying culprit behind Westfall’s tragedy and Queen Tiffin’s death 46 107 112.

Her proudest scheme was Varian Wrynn’s kidnapping and division into two people through dark magic. She intended to kill his brave half and control his gentle half, but a naga attack interrupted the ritual and allowed both to escape. When the gentle Varian returned to Stormwind, she resumed deceiving him and also manipulated Regent Bolvar Fordragon, becoming the city’s de facto ruler 104.

Exposure and Palace Ambush

Shawn reveals her identity to Bolvar and later delivers his warning to Jaina. The allies reunite both Varians, rescue Marshal Windsor, and arrange a confrontation in Stormwind Keep 54 56 104.

Onyxia notices warning signs upon entering the palace but dismisses them. Hidden assassins stab her with poisoned daggers while the Varians, Broll, Jaina, and Aegwynn attack. Her epic sword breaks against the Varians’ blades, and the mages immobilize her with Deep Freeze 104 105.

She breaks free and assumes her enormous dragon form, demolishing the keep. Although ordinary arrows cannot harm her, Shawn’s Moon Goddess’s Arrow and the archmages’ spells wound her. Still poisoned and unwilling to risk death, she escapes toward her lair faster than the pursuing gryphons can follow 105.

Siege of Her Lair

Stormwind’s expedition joins Jaina’s Mage Corps and VanCleef’s surviving masons in Dustwallow Marsh. Onyxia remains weakened by poison, but her lair contains dragonmen, hatchlings, whelps, and the adult black dragon Wingburn. The attackers kill Wingburn in a narrow passage, alerting her to their advance 115 138 139.

Onyxia increases the cavern’s heat and accelerates the hatching of hundreds of Flame Hatchlings, intending to attack the army from behind. Jaina’s scouting exposes the concealed egg passage, while Water Elementals and coordinated frost spells neutralize the heat. Confined terrain prevents Onyxia from flying freely or using even half her strength 140.

She then tries to fracture the alliance through accusations, temptations, and magic. VanCleef turns against Varian, and Onyxia exploits the confusion with a devastating breath attack. When VanCleef subsequently charges her, she impales him and throws him aside, mortally wounding him 141 143.

Death and Rebirth

After Shawn’s gargoyles distract her, his Moon Goddess’s Arrow strikes her eye and the two Varians badly wound her forelegs. The strike teams destroy her hatchlings, eliminating the reinforcements on which she depended. Desperate, she resumes the unfinished spell intended to kill Varian’s brave half 143.

Aegwynn counters with Reversal Magic, reuniting the Varians and merging their swords into Shalamayne. The restored Varian kills Onyxia with one strike. Shawn secretly captures her soul in the Dragon Soul Orb, then uses it with a black dragon egg to enable her rebirth 144 145.

Shawn names her Ancalagon for public use and conceals her identity because of the hatred surrounding her former crimes. She claims to have abandoned her corrupted past and wishes to restore the black dragonflight. Later, she supplies intelligence about Karazhan’s Underground Tomb and leaves Theramore for Blackrock Mountain on Shawn’s orders 145 146 181 196.

Appearance

  • Katrana Prestor guise: An attractive human noblewoman who dresses carefully and moves gracefully. Numerous Stormwind nobles are drawn to her 104.
  • Original dragon form: An enormous black dragon whose body nearly fills Stormwind Keep; her transformation scatters the attackers, and her struggle collapses the building 105.
  • Reborn form: A black dragon hatchling with an uncorrupted body, still too young to carry Shawn as a mount 146 196.

Personality

Onyxia’s experience and power foster extreme arrogance. She dismisses the palace’s warning signs because she believes almost no one in Stormwind can threaten her, and initially considers the assembled attackers incapable of defeating her. Her contempt for human intelligence later causes her to underestimate Jaina’s preparations 104 140.

She is calculating rather than blindly fearless. Her political schemes exploit trust, grievance, and divided loyalties; in battle, she uses ambushes and personal accusations to undermine cooperation. When the palace confrontation becomes too dangerous, she retreats to recover instead of fighting to the death 104 105 140 141.

After rebirth, she presents herself as repentant and obedient, but her claimed change remains distinct from proven redemption. She retains ambitions for the black dragonflight and vows to follow Shawn even against her father and brother. She privately acknowledges that obedience is the only path available to her as his mount 146 196.

Abilities & Skills

Shapeshifting and Flight

  • Assumes a convincing human guise for long-term infiltration 46 104.
  • Transforms into an enormous dragon, using the sudden increase in size to scatter nearby opponents 105.
  • Flies faster than the gryphons used by Jaina and Aegwynn during their pursuit 105.
  • Her reborn hatchling body can fly, but cannot yet fulfill her duties as Shawn’s mount 196.

Legendary Physiology and Physical Combat

Her original body combines immense vitality, tough hide, and overwhelming strength 105 141.

  • Ordinary arrows cannot injure her, although sufficiently powerful magic and weapons can penetrate her defenses 105.
  • Uses Black Dragon Tail Sweep against enemies near the cave entrance 141.
  • Is a master combatant with extensive experience in armed fighting 105.
  • Specially formulated SI:7 poison cannot kill her outright, but severely weakens her and remains active through the later siege 105 138.
  • Confined terrain restricts her movement and makes her vulnerable to concentrated artillery fire 140 142.

Dragon’s Breath

Onyxia’s Deep Breath is a large, destructive cone of dragonfire 105 141.

  • Heats her lair and supplies fire elements that accelerate egg hatching into Flame Hatchlings 140.
  • Can be countered by coordinated Cone of Cold, Blizzard, and Water Elementals 140 141.
  • Becomes devastating when the defenders lose coordination; one attack burns at least a quarter of the warriors and archers to death 143.

Dark Magic and Mental Manipulation

  • Splits Varian into brave and gentle halves, intending to kill one and control the other 104.
  • Beguiles Varian, Bolvar, and members of Stormwind’s nobility 104 106.

  • Tailors accusations and offers to individual opponents, including offering Bolvar the throne with herself as queen 141.
  • After rebirth, scouts the Underground Tomb alongside the Lynx Princess and reports the presence of Dark Knights and undead. Their reconnaissance stops short of deeper chambers because of the risk of discovery 181.

  • Varian Wrynn — Kidnapping victim, manipulated ruler, and eventual killer. Her attempt to destroy his brave half instead creates the opportunity for his restoration 104 143 144.
  • Bolvar Fordragon — Former political pawn. She later tries to tempt him into killing Varian and taking the throne 104 141.
  • Jaina Proudmoore — Principal opponent who counters her lair defenses and offers purification through the dragonflights rather than execution 140 141.
  • Aegwynn — Magical opponent whose Reversal Magic defeats her final ritual 144.
