Because of the Quincy invasion, all Soul Reapers stationed in or traveling to and from the World of the Living had long since returned to the Soul Society to await orders. Thus, the Hell Butterflies managed by each division had remained in their barracks and taken no part in the operation.
Even more Hell Butterflies surged up from beneath the shattered ground of the 1st Division barracks, joining the ones flying out from the other divisions.
As the morning sun rose, the Hell Butterflies formed a churning black storm against the blood-orange sky, sweeping toward Cang Nan.
