Background / History

Ukitake enters the Spirit Arts Academy alongside Lin Nan and Kyoraku Shunsui as one of Yamamoto's disciples. Although regarded as mature and steady, he is visibly excited by the academy's distribution of Asauchi. 37 40

He is sickly and initially lacks a formal combat foundation. During a dormitory demonstration, however, he replicates Kyoraku's Bakudō #8: Sek simply by following the flow of spiritual pressure, revealing an exceptional instinct for Kido. 42

Unohana tailors Ukitake's sword instruction to his frail constitution rather than teaching him an overly forceful style. Soon afterward, Oetsu declares him ready for Shikai training; unlike Lin Nan, Ukitake rapidly establishes dialogue and synchronization with his Zanpakuto. 53 57 59

During the Rukon District crisis, Ukitake fights beside Lin Nan.
