Athrun first becomes connected to Captain Felix Griffith when he notices Felix's academy photograph and is reminded of his absent friend, Kira Yamato 13. When they meet, Athrun immediately questions Felix about their striking resemblance; Felix examines a childhood photograph of Kira but dismisses the similarity as a possible consequence of genetic adjustment 52.

While training at the military academy, Athrun spars alongside Yzak Joule, Nicol Amalfi, Dearka Elsman, and Rusty against Felix. He is the first to propose coordinated tactics with Yzak after their uncoordinated fire proves ineffective, though Felix still defeats all five cadets 103 104.

Break with Lacus and ZAFT
