Becoming a Night Roaming God

A person with strong spirituality may occasionally see the Hundred Night Miasma. Becoming a Night Roaming God requires more: guidance, training, and the transformation of spirituality into divinity, which enables feats beyond ordinary human ability 6 7. Spirituality differs innately between individuals, so practitioners do not all develop the same abilities or follow the same lineage 29 31.

Progression is dangerous. A legacy provides methods tested by predecessors, reducing the risk of losing control while refining divinity. The Ascension Staircase describes advancement toward higher ranks; reaching a high rank requires obtaining superior spirituality from powerful Hundred Night Miasma and converting it into divinity 30 31.

Abilities & Lineages

Spiritual sight and divinity

• Guided use of spirituality reveals the supernatural world beneath ordinary city life, including the Hundred Night Miasma 6.
• Divinity, rather than sight alone, qualifies someone as a Night Roaming God 7.
• Abilities vary by lineage and need not be suited to combat 29.

Yin Son of Heaven lineage

• Ghost Messenger — Jing Tao’s entry-level rank; she can command ghosts 15.
• Ferryman — one rank above Ghost Messenger. Yan Luo can ferry ghosts to the Yellow Springs for reincarnation and commands powerful ghosts 29 30.

Path of Fragrance

• Sniffer — the lowest identified tier of Xu Yi’s fragmented branch, associated with sensing scents. Xu Yi’s divinity lets him trace a fragrance to its source 26 27 30 31.
• Doctor of Fragrance — a rank beyond Sniffer. According to the foreign practitioner, its divinity can produce perfumes that influence consciousness, emotions, and memories 38.
• The foreign practitioner uses a method for extracting spiritual fragrance from bodies, but his former master held that he had lost control of his spirituality and become a demon rather than a true Night Roaming God 36 38.

Spirit Remains

• Spirit Remains are objects bearing special spirituality. Their abilities differ according to their source, and some dangerous remains are classified as Living Remains 14.
• Shadow Wood incense burner — a remain of a mid-tier Night Roaming God. Its residual spirituality can temper a user’s spirit, provided the user withstands its erosion; Xu Yi uses it to refine divinity 21 27 30.
• Fox Incense — a remain created when Xu Yi transforms Ji Xiao. When lit, it causes people who smell it within a small area to collapse for about three minutes; its spirituality then loses control 13 14.
