Background / History

Ivan transmigrated into an unidentified, unusually large glowing jellyfish. He awoke trapped in a fishing net and survived repeated injuries through an instinctive regenerative division: splitting into larvae and reforming his body. The process continually shrank him until Gais bought him and displayed him in a water tank as a fraudulent “Lord’s spirit” for the Hidden Cult. 1

The cult’s prayers unexpectedly nourished Ivan with faith energy. He learned to regulate his glow and consciously prepare a replacement body within himself, intending to escape once he had accumulated enough power. 1

Gais’s arrest leaves Ivan’s tank dry and his life endangered. Little George’s sincere prayer, strengthened because Ivan had fulfilled the boy’s earlier wish, breaks Ivan’s first faith-energy shackle. Ivan divides into points of light, explodes the tank, reforms in the air, and unintentionally grants Little George the remnants of his excess power. 3 4

Realizing that answered prayers produce stronger faith than empty worship, Ivan decides to cultivate genuine believers rather than merely exploit a fraudulent cult. Through Little George, he begins helping the residents of South York Poorhouse and accepts them into the Holy Spirit Society. 5 7

Ivan adopts the title Lord of All Spirits to build a credible divine identity while concealing that he is physically a jellyfish. He appoints Little George to lead baptisms, brings Gais into the Society as a missionary, and directs the group’s expansion despite its financial difficulties. 11 19 23 24

After Gais steals God Blood from the Clock Tower, Ivan devours it in an attempt to gain an Order Aspect. The substance nearly drives him out of control, but regeneration allows him to shed the dangerous scarlet state. He learns that extraordinary materials can be processed through his body into Gifts for believers rather than powers for himself. 15 17

Ivan later recruits Diana for her ability to translate ancient texts, makes her the Holy Spirit Society’s Chief Knight, and grants her the Order Aspect’s Punishment Knight path. His investigations with Diana lead him into the Spirit Realm and deepen his concern that the historical Lord of All Spirits may have been a real entity. 31 35 37

Appearance

Ivan normally appears as a large, transparent jellyfish with an umbrella-shaped body and numerous tentacles. His glow changes with his condition and the power he is using. 1 16

Ivan is pragmatic and improvisational. Although he initially benefits from Gais’s fraudulent worship, he recognizes that believers whose needs are genuinely met provide stronger faith energy and chooses to build a functioning congregation around that principle. 3 5

He maintains an aloof, omniscient persona because his followers expect a god, often allowing them to interpret his vague statements as profound revelations. Internally, however, he is frequently confused by the world’s supernatural systems and relies on the deductions of Gais, Diana, and others. 4 11 13 34

Despite his self-interest and occasional willingness to consider criminal solutions to the Society’s lack of funds, Ivan worries about overworking or endangering his followers. He restores Little George’s Spirituality after the boy collapses, protects him during the bishop’s hypnosis, and enters the Spirit Realm to rescue Diana. 23 24 28 35
