Background

Abel serves as a Night Watchman captain in Trino City, patrolling at night and investigating suspected cult activity on behalf of the Church of Divine Grace. He lives and works from the Night Watchmen's Clock Tower at St. Peter's Cathedral, resting during the day after nightly duties. Though he works under Bishop Tarik, Abel shows little interest in church administration and finds the bishop personally unsettling 5 42.

His first investigation of Gais's Small Chapel gathering leads him to suspect a heretical ritual. After finding no conventional evidence, Abel establishes an Arbitration Domain that forces Gais to admit that he used a jellyfish to swindle worshippers. He refuses Gais's attempted bribe and recognizes corruption within the Night Watchmen as a betrayal of faith 2 3.

When the domain left at the chapel abruptly vanishes, Abel returns to investigate. He finds the jellyfish gone, the tank shattered, and an unfamiliar green leaf carrying a non-Church Aspect aura. During the workers' strike, he supports the promised wage settlement because breaking it would undermine public order, then coerces the resisting foremen into compliance 50. He is nevertheless capable of mentorship and humor, patiently explaining the dangers of becoming a Beyonder to Tom and joking with him despite his otherwise stern demeanor 24 25.
