Background / History

Itachi was initially celebrated as an exceptional Uchiha prodigy and trusted the Third Hokage to judge the clan fairly. Xuanye's questions about the Uchiha's forced isolation after the Nine-Tails Incident disrupted that faith and left him uncertain about Konoha's treatment of his clan 2.

Xuanye's political insight and overwhelming performance in their sparring match dealt a severe blow to Itachi's pride. Rather than abandon his ambitions, Itachi accepted Xuanye's challenge to act and become strong enough to change the relationship between the Uchiha and Konoha himself 10 12 16.

Root later targeted Itachi and Xuanye to provoke Fugaku. Itachi demanded legal authority for their arrest, fought the Chūnin Ding with Substitution and Fire Style techniques, and was ultimately rescued by Fugaku and the Uchiha Military Police Force 16 18.

During an escort mission, the Deva Path of Akatsuki devastated Itachi's team. Tenma was severely injured protecting him, and Itachi awakened a Two-Tomoe Sharingan in response to the trauma. Though the Deva Path offered him a place in Akatsuki, Itachi rejected him as a murderer 113 114.

By age ten, Itachi had awakened the Three-Tomoe Sharingan during a life-or-death mission and killed the Iwagakure ninja who ambushed his squad 168. He later fought on the Uchiha side during the conflict with Konoha, where his battlefield judgment allowed him to overcome repeated threats from stronger opponents 191.

After Genya became Hokage, Itachi received Flying Thunder God training due to his exceptional talent and comprehension. He eventually led a team sent to recover Kakashi from Hiruko's Puppet Curse, coordinating Hyuga Sora, Inuzuka Hana, and Pakura 206 208 240.

Shisui used Kotoamatsukami to place Itachi in an illusion where he experienced an alternate life that culminated in his slaughter of the Uchiha clan. The experience awakened Itachi's Mangekyō Sharingan, but also left him burdened by the life and crimes he believed he had lived within the illusion 238.

Personality

Itachi is quiet, introspective, and reluctant to expose his feelings. When Izumi noticed his distress, he denied that anything was wrong rather than share the frustration caused by Xuanye's rapid growth 12.

His early devotion to Konoha's ideals gradually gave way to a stronger commitment to his family and clan. He remains determined to grow even when he recognizes the enormous gap between himself and Genya 16 111 168.

Itachi is fiercely protective of Sasuke. When Mitokado Yue and his companions harmed his younger brother, Itachi immediately incapacitated them and treated the attack as unforgivable 140. He is similarly loyal to his comrades, refusing to flee during the Deva Path's assault and later risking himself to protect Shisui from Root 113 185.
