Power Progression

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Impure World Reincarnation — initial mastery 151 152 Quickly learns the forbidden technique and successfully summons Shimura Danzō. His first version has sluggish control, slow regeneration, fragmented memories, and strength below that of an Academy student.
Impure World Reincarnation — improved restoration of consciousness 157 158 Further research allows Danzō to converse coherently and recount his death. Hiruzen recognizes that the technique can now preserve complete thoughts and memories, rather than produce only confused human bombs.

Background / History

Academy teaching and early interest in Chonhua

Orochimaru occasionally lectures at the Ninja Academy alongside Hiruzen’s other disciples. His profound understanding of chakra and techniques attracts the largest attendance among their classes, despite his relatively infrequent visits 5.

Chonhua initially rejects him as a prospective teacher, considering him dangerous and politically compromising. Orochimaru later suspects that Chonhua has awakened the Sharingan, but keeps his observations private 2 12.

Second Shinobi World War

Against Salamander Hanzō, Orochimaru advocates long-range attacks rather than exposing close-combat troops to poison. Hatake Sakumo subsequently sends him south to halt Sunagakure’s advance, where he gathers intelligence through snakes and commands the close-quarters units 36 38.

He orders an end to the pursuit of retreating Sunagakure forces, but Nawaki disobeys and nearly dies in an explosive-tag ambush. Chonhua’s rescue leaves Orochimaru grateful and visibly shaken. Seeing Chonhua’s three-tomoe Sharingan, he questions whether the eyes had awakened earlier; Chonhua’s sudden arrogance makes him reconsider that suspicion 39 40.

Orochimaru and Sakumo coordinate efforts to clear Sunagakure infiltrators threatening communications and supply lines. During the fighting against the Akasuna Couple, he restrains his attacks because their puppetry forces captured Konoha ninja to shield them 42 47.

For the final offensive against Amegakure, Orochimaru joins Jiraiya and Tsunade in summoning their respective beasts. His forces capture Amegakure’s logistics camp as Chonhua kills Hanzō. Afterward, he discusses the meaning of life with Chonhua and becomes increasingly eager to study the Mangekyō Sharingan 104 109 110.

Konoha politics and Danzō’s disappearance

Orochimaru returns to Konoha for the Jōnin Council and takes an interest in Chonhua’s appointment as Uchiha clan head. During the controversy surrounding Sakumo, he reports that signatories have withdrawn from the petition against Danzō and cautions Tsunade against confronting him directly 124 138.

Hiruzen later commissions him to improve Impure World Reincarnation to establish Danzō’s fate. Orochimaru suspects Chonhua, reasoning that he possesses both the motive and ability to make Danzō disappear without leaving evidence. Chonhua firmly denies involvement 149 150 151.

Orochimaru’s summons confirm Danzō’s death. As the technique improves, Danzō’s testimony attributes his murder to a monstrous Jashin Cult follower, leading Orochimaru to believe his original intuition about Chonhua was wrong. Hiruzen permits continued research but demands absolute secrecy; Orochimaru accepts responsibility for any leak 151 152 157 158.

Jashin Cult mission

Orochimaru leads an elite team comprising Chonhua, Namikaze Minato, and Shibi Aburame into the Land of Hot Water. Their commissioned cult-suppression mission provides cover for investigating and eliminating the Jashin Cult, whose supposed transformation techniques fascinate him 158 159 167.

The team discovers that the cult has infiltrated Yugakure and allied with powerful clans. At its mountain hideout, Orochimaru captures immortal followers alive, intending to investigate their immortality and blood-based curse 161 164.

The supposed Jashin tempts him with claims of having lived alongside the Sage of Six Paths. Orochimaru initially insists on preserving it as a source of historical knowledge, but authorizes Chonhua to burn its vessel once its manipulation becomes apparent. Its emergence as a giant bat exposes the deception, which particularly angers him because it destroys his hoped-for connection to ninjutsu’s origins 167 168.

After the cult’s defeat, Orochimaru supports operations against the clans and Guardian Ninja. Hiruzen orders him to remain in the country and establish a defensive line, frustrating his desire to return to his laboratory. Chonhua refuses his invitation to stay, but grants him three days with captured cultists and the Great Bat for interrogation 172 173 174 177.

Kumogakure operation

Orochimaru develops a plan to exploit Blue B’s unstable condition and unleash the Eight-Tails inside Kumogakure. He infiltrates the outskirts concealed within a small snake, then calls Chonhua through a marked kunai. The long-serving mole Yoshikawa supplies access through the village’s perception barrier 179 180.

After Chonhua controls Blue B and the Eight-Tails, Orochimaru directs him to undo the beast’s seal. They subsequently ambush returning Kumogakure forces with a giant snake, and Orochimaru orders Chonhua to burn it with Amaterasu despite the summon’s inevitable death 182 184.

The operation captures Dodai, A, and Shi. Orochimaru openly credits Chonhua, admitting that taking them down alone would have been difficult. He then offers a research partnership ostensibly aimed at curing Mangekyō blindness; Chonhua declines. At the later victory banquet, Orochimaru urges him to return to Konoha 188 191.

Appearance

  • Eyes: Golden to dark-golden, snake-like pupils; also described as amber 38 110 168.
  • Mouth: Thin lips, which he repeatedly licks when excited or intrigued 151.
  • Voice: Raspy, hoarse, and dry, compared to a viper’s hiss 36 151.
  • Headband: Wears Konoha’s forehead protector, but removes it for covert infiltration 180.

Personality

Orochimaru’s central ambition is to collect, learn, and research every technique in the world. His interests extend to chakra, bloodline abilities, tailed beasts, immortality, and the historical origins of ninjutsu. The possibility of obtaining firsthand knowledge from the Sage of Six Paths’ era briefly outweighs his teammates’ objections to preserving the supposed Jashin 167.

His curiosity can interrupt urgent work. While Hiruzen mourns the reincarnated Danzō, Orochimaru examines the body and tears off an arm to observe regeneration. He similarly becomes absorbed in studying Chonhua’s Susanoo until Minato draws his attention back to the mission 151 152 165.

Despite fearing death and wishing to live forever, he explicitly identifies himself as a Konoha ninja and accepts dangerous assignments. He shows genuine gratitude when Chonhua saves Nawaki and avoids harming comrades controlled by the Akasuna Couple. This concern does not extend equally to his summons: he treats a giant snake as expendable when sacrificing it offers a military advantage 40 47 180 184.

His fascination with Chonhua combines admiration, envy, and a desire to experiment. At this stage, he has not conceived of taking Chonhua’s body to obtain the Mangekyō Sharingan. Nevertheless, he eagerly imagines Chonhua eventually seeking his help against blindness, enjoying the prospect of the stronger ninja becoming dependent on him 110 163 188.

Abilities & Skills

Snake Techniques and Summoning

Orochimaru uses snakes for intelligence gathering, infiltration, ranged attacks, and live capture 38 47 164 179.

  • Hidden Shadow Snake Hands: Releases attacking snakes from his sleeve. Immortal cultists can sever them, while enemies using allied hostages constrain his targeting 47 164.
  • Snake Mouth Bind: Summons a giant snake to swallow targets and restrain them alive. He captures four immortal cultists through successive uses 164.
  • Large-scale containment: Traps a Kumogakure squad inside a snake and channels chakra into its internal walls to push the prisoners toward digestive fluids 184.
  • Manda: Summons Manda during the final battle against Amegakure 104.
  • Covert movement: Emerges from a small snake near Kumogakure before summoning Chonhua to his location 179.

Impure World Reincarnation

Orochimaru learns and improves Senju Tobirama’s forbidden summoning technique under Hiruzen’s authorization 149 151.

  • Requires biological tissue from the deceased as a medium to guide the soul 152.
  • Can loosen control without dispelling the technique, allowing the summoned person’s free will and memories to surface 152.
  • Studies regeneration, retained strength, control, and memory restoration through repeated experimentation 151 152 158.
  • Considers summoning souls directly without tissue, but this remains an untested research idea 152.
  • Continues under strict secrecy and Hiruzen’s restrictions on its use 158.

Survival Techniques

Many of his secret arts emphasize survival, making immortality a particularly attractive research subject 167.

  • Sloughing Technique: A recovery technique that requires massive chakra expenditure. Orochimaru compares the Great Bat’s regeneration to it while questioning the bat’s own costs 169.
  • Has personally encountered the White Snake Sage, though no acquisition of Sage Mode is documented 168.

Ninjutsu Research and Teaching

His technical knowledge supports both Academy instruction and experimental research 5 163.

  • Wood Release: Secretly researches the recreation of Wood Release users for Hiruzen. Hashirama’s cells overwhelm ordinary subjects, leaving the project with little progress 163.
  • Sharingan: Wants to uncover the Uchiha bloodline’s origins and study Chonhua’s Mangekyō. He proposes using Chonhua in research that could advance both Wood Release and ocular studies 163 188.
  • Hallucinogenic drugs: Develops drugs intended to exploit Blue B’s unstable mental state 180 182.
  • Summoned-beast expertise: Identifies the Great Bat’s “blessing” as a blood-pact ability rather than divine intervention 168.

Strategy and Espionage

Orochimaru favors tactics that exploit terrain, resources, intelligence, and enemy vulnerabilities 36 179.

  • Recommends long-range bombardment against Hanzō’s poison 36.
  • Coordinates troop movements to protect communications and supply routes 42.
  • Uses transformation disguises and a verified mole to infiltrate Kumogakure 180.
  • Prioritizes capturing important enemies alive, with their corpses as a fallback source of intelligence 186.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Kusanagi swords: Has located several after learning of them from ancient texts. His search for the Totsuka Blade ends when he recognizes it as an energy weapon belonging to Chonhua’s Susanoo, not a sword in his own possession 166.
  • Pentagram Kunai: Uses Chonhua’s marked kunai to signal for Flying Thunder God transport 179.
  • Hallucinogenic medicine: Prepared for the operation against Blue B 180 182.
  • Steel wire: Binds the captured Dodai, A, and Shi 188.
  • Forbidden-jutsu scroll: Receives Hiruzen’s scroll for studying and improving Impure World Reincarnation 149.

Relationships

  • Sarutobi Hiruzen — Teacher and patron. As Hiruzen’s favorite student, Orochimaru receives unusual trust and access to the Scroll of Seals, but his forbidden research brings explicit warnings about punishment and a possible future confrontation 149 158.
  • Uchiha Chonhua — Junior ally, research prospect, and persistent mystery. Their effective battlefield partnership coexists with Chonhua’s guarded refusals of Orochimaru’s invitations and Orochimaru’s suspicion of his hidden nature 151 177 180 188.
  • Tsunade — Fellow disciple and wartime colleague. He worries about her reaction to Nawaki’s near-death and later cautions her against confronting Danzō 40 138.
  • Jiraiya — Fellow disciple and battlefield partner. They coordinate strategy and summons, and reunite with Tsunade and Chonhua to discuss the war’s approaching end 36 104 149.
  • Nawaki — Subordinate whose disobedience nearly proves fatal. His rescue leaves Orochimaru relieved and grateful to Chonhua 39 40.
  • Hatake Sakumo — Senior commander and operational partner against Sunagakure 36 38 42.
  • Namikaze Minato — Mission teammate whom Orochimaru has watched grow up. Minato challenges his proposal to bring the supposed Jashin back to Konoha 167.
  • Shibi Aburame — Mission teammate whose insect techniques Orochimaru praises for their tracking utility 160 164.
  • Shimura Danzō — Subject of his reincarnation experiments and interrogation. Danzō’s testimony redirects Orochimaru’s investigation toward the Jashin Cult 151 157 158.
  • Yoshikawa — Long-serving Konoha mole whose intelligence enables the Kumogakure infiltration; Orochimaru insists on verifying his allegiance before relying on him 180.
