On the fifth day of Gryn's work in the Queens Quarter, reinforcements from the Whispers arrived in King's Landing.
The fifty reinforcements were all Crabb clansmen, led from the docks of the Blackwater Rush by Mutton Waters.
Crackclaw Point shared similarities with the North; its people were almost all descendants of the First Men, generally tall and sturdy, with hair and eyes of either black or brown.
[The Andals mostly have varied hair and eye colors.]
[Westeros is primarily composed of the First Men, Andals, and Rhoynar. The First Men are mainly in the North, the Rhoynar mainly in Dorne, and the rest of the land is primarily Andal.]
[Thus, the King of Westeros's title begins: King of the Andals, the Rhoynar, and the First Men, Lord of the Seven Kingdoms, Warden of the Realm...]
From the improvement in the clansmen's discipline, Gryn could sense that the soldiers had not slackened their training despite their lord's absence from their lands.
The newly arrived soldiers gathered at the command post in the Queens Quarter. After reviewing the spirited troops as they marched, Gryn was very satisfied.
Gryn liked the simple, honest soldiers of Crackclaw Point, especially their readiness to draw steel the moment he gave the order.
With this "simple, honest" nature combined with the soldiers' steadily improving discipline, Gryn believed that the Crabb legion would sooner or later become the premier fighting force in Westeros.
Gryn noticed a young man standing behind the crowd who looked quite out of place among the Crabb clansmen.
The youth wore worn-out leather armor and carried a bow; he appeared to be about the same age as Gryn.
He was lean and tall, with medium-length, wavy red hair and a face covered in freckles, his expression reserved.
Gryn raised an eyebrow and beckoned the red-haired youth over.
The red-haired youth nodded nervously, glanced at Mutton Waters standing nearby, and then trotted over.
"Greetings, noble lord. My name is Anguy."
Hearing the name, Gryn's eyes flickered. "How did you come to be here?"
[In the story, Anguy won the archery championship at the tournament held in King's Landing to celebrate Eddard Stark becoming Hand of the King, later joining the Brotherhood Without Banners with unparalleled archery skills.]
Anguy replied respectfully, "I joined a mercenary company, but it disbanded. Recently, I've been checking the docks to see if there were any suitable companies to join. This morning at the Blackwater Rush docks, I met your guard, Lord Mutton, and he brought me here."
It turned out that while Mutton was waiting at the docks, he had used his beast-like intuition to spot Anguy, who looked unremarkable but possessed great hidden strength.
Mutton's instinct told him that this man was no ordinary fighter and that Gryn would like him.
Trusting his gut, Mutton had approached him for a chat and brought him along, intending to introduce Anguy to Gryn.
Mutton's broad frame appeared, and he said with a simple smile, "Lord Gryn, I felt Anguy's skills were quite good, so I brought him along."
Gryn nodded and asked Anguy, "What is your specialty?"
Hearing this, the previously reserved Anguy puffed out his chest. "My lord, I am best at archery. I can hit whatever I aim at."
Gryn knew Anguy was a formidable master archer and wanted to promote him to be his personal guard, just like Mutton. With Mutton specializing in melee and Anguy in ranged combat, the two would complement each other with terrifying effectiveness.
A lord's personal guard was effectively his confidant; appointing a newcomer directly could affect the sense of fairness among the soldiers.
However, when the individual's skill was truly extraordinary, it was a different matter.
Gryn sat in a chair and clapped his hands, drawing the attention of those around him. "Anguy, show us your skills."
Anguy scanned his surroundings, looked up at the sky, calmly took an arrow from his quiver, stepped forward, and drove the arrow vertically into the ground.
Though Anguy looked thin, he had considerable strength, and the arrow sank nearly halfway into the earth.
Once finished, Anguy stepped back.
He picked up his bow, nocked an arrow, and drew the string to its limit, aiming toward the sky.
Anguy's movements were fluid and natural, carrying an air of absolute confidence.
He released the string, and with a whoosh, the arrow shot straight into the sky.
After a long moment, the arrow Anguy had fired into the air descended with a sharp whistle, its target being the arrow he had driven into the ground.
With a crack, the falling arrow split the grounded arrow into a V-shape before burying itself deep into the earth.
A miraculous feat!
Gryn's men couldn't help but marvel at Anguy's archery.
Gryn was satisfied; his goal had been achieved, and he publicly appointed Anguy as his personal guard.
From this moment on, Anguy, like Mutton, became Gryn's personal guard.
Coming from a common background, Anguy couldn't suppress his inner excitement; a personal guard had a great chance of being knighted by his lord.
For a commoner like Anguy, this was equivalent to crossing the threshold of social class.
Anguy knelt on one knee before Gryn and thanked him loudly with great emotion.
Gryn smiled gently, waved his hand, and let the grinning Mutton take Anguy away to get settled.
