Background / History
Daenerys is the daughter of King Aerys II Targaryen and Queen Rhaella Targaryen, and the younger sister of Viserys Targaryen. She remembers little beyond a house with a red door in Braavos, where Ser Willem Darry called her “little princess.” After Darry's death, Daenerys and Viserys wandered across the Free Cities, selling their possessions—including their mother's crown—as their supporters gradually withdrew. 25 107
During their exile in Pentos, Viserys terrorized Daenerys with threats to “Wake the Dragon” and treated her as an asset to exchange for an army. Illyrio Mopatis and Varys likewise regarded her as a controllable pawn in a scheme to use Viserys, the Dothraki, and her prospective death to plunge Westeros into war. 94 107 108 109
Viserys ordered her to obtain Count Gryn Crabb's allegiance despite her fear and confusion. Their meeting became the turning point of her life: Gryn named her the Queen of Love and Beauty with a flower crown, explained that power came from “the sword in one's hand,” and assigned the former centurions Borona and Osana as her personal attendants and guards. 110
Daenerys uncovered Illyrio's plan to use her death to provoke the Dothraki. She ordered his execution, hired Ser Jorah Mormont as her protector, and fled Pentos with Viserys, Borona, Osana, and Gryn's support. 114 115
She later ruled in Essos, helped defend Qarth's city-state from invaders, and publicly declared that enslaved people aboard her ship would be free to leave at the next port. 125 157 After surviving a funeral fire unharmed, she emerged with three newly hatched dragons. 204
Daenerys concealed her identity as Rhaella of the Summer Isles while returning toward Westeros. Gryn entrusted her with governing Crackclaw Point and later the Vale, where she studied statecraft under Maester Al and gained practical experience as a ruler. 213 512
Her identity as the lost Targaryen princess was publicly confirmed before the lords of the Reach and Crownlands. She announced her betrothal to Gryn, who was presented as Lord Regent of the Seven Kingdoms. 534 535
Daenerys entered King's Landing to widespread public acclaim, returned to the Red Keep with her dragons, and claimed the Iron Throne. Although High Septon Zari prepared to crown her, Daenerys asked Gryn to place the crown upon her head instead. 560 565 566
Appearance
Daenerys is a petite, exceptionally beautiful young woman with Valyrian features. Early in the story, her timid manner and slight build contrast sharply with her later regal bearing. 25 109 110
- Fair skin “as fair as milk.” 25
- Long silver hair, often described as shining like molten silver. 109
- Pale violet or amethyst-colored eyes. 107 110
- Petite but well-proportioned frame. 25 110
- Frequently wears purple, ivory, or ceremonial garments suited to her Targaryen status. 109 170
- Can survive intense fire without injury; after one dragon dream, her injuries healed and her body became stronger. 138 204
Personality
Early Daenerys is fearful, lonely, and deeply dependent on Viserys despite his abuse. Her greatest fear is abandonment; she initially submits to his demands because she believes obedience is the only way to remain with her last living family. 107 108
Her experiences in Pentos awaken a decisive and politically aware side. She learns to recognize manipulation, confronts Illyrio, takes independent command of her safety, and gradually ceases to fear Viserys. 110 114 115 138
As a ruler, Daenerys values mercy, loyalty, and the welfare of ordinary people. She frees enslaved followers, offers aid to restore the Great Sept of Harrenhal, and recognizes the importance of patience and dissenting counsel in government. 125 522 602 647
She remains fiercely protective of those she considers family—especially Gryn, her unborn child, and her dragons. This protectiveness can turn into anger and ruthlessness when she perceives threats, as shown by Illyrio's execution and her banishment of Willas Tyrell. 114 645 685 686
