At 6:30 PM, the sun hung precariously on the horizon, about to set, spilling its final rays of dim, golden light.
In the twilight, Danzo pushed open the half-ajar gate and stepped into the courtyard.
The moment he entered, a familiar scent wafted toward him, causing Danzo to instinctively knit his brows.
This was not the scent of home, but the lingering smell of tobacco that always clung to Hiruzen Sarutobi.
Danzo scanned his surroundings and quickly discovered the source: Asuma, who was hiding behind the rockery in the corner of the yard, puffing away on a cigarette.
Like father, like son.
After silently criticizing his old friend in his heart, Danzo employed master-level silent infiltration techniques, creeping toward Asuma without a sound.
In the corner, Asuma held the cigarette between his right fingers and took a deep drag, the smoke curling out from his nose like two long serpents.
Danzo closed in behind Asuma, one hand reaching out to pinch the burning cigarette from his fingers, while the other clamped down on the back of Asuma's neck.
"Smoking? You let someone get this close behind you without the slightest awareness; if you went to the front lines like this, you wouldn't survive a single day." Danzo extinguished the cigarette butt and criticized him with a stern face.
"This is home, what's wrong with me relaxing a bit?" Asuma looked at Danzo, unconvinced. "Besides, don't you smoke yourself?"
Danzo looked at Asuma with an air of natural authority. "I have already quit, and you are not allowed to smoke either! Do you have any idea how the smell of smoke can expose your position on the battlefield or during a mission?"
"I don't smoke when I'm out," Asuma lied, stiffening his neck without a hint of guilt.
As a seasoned veteran, Danzo saw through the lie at a glance. He warned, "If I catch you smoking again, don't even think about going to the front lines."
"I..." Asuma wanted to retort.
"One more word, and you're not going at all," Danzo interrupted.
Asuma glared at Danzo, seething with anger, but for the sake of reaching the front lines, he was forced to swallow his pride and head toward the house with his head down.
Danzo stood where he was, watching Asuma's retreating back and Biwako as she emerged from the house upon hearing the commotion, a faint smile forced onto his face.
"Arguing the moment you get back? I think you should just move into the Hokage Building and stay there! Don't bother coming home," Biwako said, using the recent incident to express her dissatisfaction with Danzo not returning home for days.
Facing Biwako, a sense of awkwardness rose in Danzo's heart; he truly did not know how to face the wife of his old friend in his current state.
"What are you still standing there for? Come inside and eat!" Seeing her "husband" standing there like a statue, Biwako said with a huff.
After a few seconds of silence, Danzo managed to squeeze out one word: "Fine!"
With that, Danzo braced himself and walked toward the house and Biwako.
Standing at the doorway, Biwako frowned as she watched him. Ever since his injury, she had felt that Hiruzen seemed to have changed; his behavior was odd, and he seemed to have grown distant from her.
That old fool! Is he looking down on me because I'm getting old?
A woman's suspicion inexplicably sprouted in Biwako's heart, and the gaze she leveled at Danzo grew increasingly scrutinizing.
Danzo was highly sensitive to this shift in her gaze. His heart tightened; fearing his identity might be exposed, he could only try his best to remain relaxed.
"The village is about to go to war with the Hidden Cloud, and there are many matters to attend to. I've just been too busy," Danzo explained as he took off his shoes and stepped into the house.
Biwako and Asuma followed him inside, and they all took their seats at the dining table.
Danzo sat at the head of the table, looking at his wife and son on either side of him, then lowered his head to the food and silently picked up his chopsticks.
At this moment, Danzo felt fortunate that he had attended many of Hiruzen Sarutobi's family dinners as a friend, which gave him a decent understanding of the dietary habits of Hiruzen and his family.
In the bright dining room, Danzo ate his meal in silence. Biwako, sitting to his right, didn't speak either, though she would occasionally tilt her head to look at him, appearing unusually quiet.
Only Asuma, with somewhat rough movements, shoveled food into his mouth with his bowl, making quite a bit of noise.
What should have been a warm family dinner felt strangely awkward in the heavy silence.
This oddity was only broken by the arrival of an unexpected guest.
Hiruzen Sarutobi had come to visit, wearing the guise of Danzo.
Perhaps out of concern for his son, or perhaps due to other matters, Hiruzen rushed into the courtyard and arrived at the house with a lack of decorum.
The sound from outside the courtyard caused Danzo to breathe a secret sigh of relief. He promptly set down his bowl and chopsticks and said to Biwako, "It might be someone here to report information. I'll go check."
After speaking, Danzo maintained a natural exterior while his heart raced with the urge to escape; he rose from the table and exited the house.
Outside, in the courtyard, Hiruzen stood in his former home, his heart filled with complex emotions. Seeing Danzo walk out, those emotions curdled into rage.
That bastard Danzo! He stole his body, usurped his family, and now he even dared to threaten him with Asuma's safety.
This fellow had gone too far. If not for his concern for the village, he would have already struck at Danzo.
Even if they both perished together, it would be better than this bastard brazenly stealing everything that belonged to him!
"Danzo." Danzo stood on the porch of the house, looking down slightly at Hiruzen, who stood in the courtyard.
"Hiruzen!" Hiruzen looked at the man standing before him wearing his own body, his tone laced with fury.
"What business do you have with me?" Danzo asked in a flat tone.
Seeing Danzo's attitude, Hiruzen's anger only flared higher!
What kind of attitude is that? Do you not know why I'm looking for you?
"I have something to discuss with you!" Hiruzen said, his tone unpleasant, his eyes fixed on Danzo with a hint of threat.
"Fine, let's go outside to talk." Finding it truly awkward to face Biwako inside the house, Danzo had finally found an excuse to leave.
"Fine, let's talk outside." Hiruzen Sarutobi did not want to involve his family.
Once they had spoken, Danzo walked down from the corridor bridge and arrived in front of Hiruzen Sarutobi, ready to leave together.
Just as the two of them turned around, Biwako's voice, laced with a hint of coldness, drifted from behind them, "You two, is there anything that can't wait until after the meal?"
Hearing his wife's voice, Hiruzen Sarutobi's body jolted. He hurriedly turned to look behind him, and upon seeing his wife standing at the doorway with her arms crossed and a frigid expression, his heart was filled with longing.
"Danzo and I have important matters to discuss. You all go ahead and eat; I will be back in a moment," Danzo replied, turning back to address Biwako.
Beside him, Hiruzen Sarutobi heard Danzo's response and could not help but turn his head to glare at him, his heart brimming with stifled frustration and anger.
"Danzo, is the matter very urgent?" Biwako asked coldly, looking at Hiruzen Sarutobi, who was currently inhabiting Danzo's body.
Hiruzen Sarutobi looked into his wife's indifferent gaze and felt a deep sense of misery, yet he still said, "It is urgent. I need to have a private word with Hiruzen."
Biwako took one last look at the two of them before turning and walking directly back into the house.
After watching Biwako's figure disappear, Danzo looked at the Hiruzen Sarutobi beside him. He said nothing, but his eyes expressed everything.
Your wife is truly fierce!
