Hearing Kisame's seemingly mocking words, Danzo snorted coldly and ignored him.
He was a tiger fallen to the plains now. Even though Root had bases outside, there were few places left that could shelter him. Konoha was determined to hunt him down this time, and his own strength was still too limited.
At a time like this, only Akatsuki had the power to protect him.
As for Nagato, back then, he had not known that Hanzō and Danzo had conspired to kill Yahiko. After all, Hanzō had been the only one to appear before them.
And Danzo had no idea that Akatsuki's leader was the one from Amegakure whom he had once plotted against.

The Deva Path spoke calmly. As he formed hand seals, a Ring radiating a hazy glow appeared. Danzo took it; the character "Void" was inscribed in its center.
Leaping into Orochimaru's former position, Danzo said in a low voice, "This old man has no problem acting alone. But do not forget our agreement."
The Deva Path replied calmly, "Of course. When our plan is realized, we will help you return to Konoha and become Hokage. For now, just stay in the organization with peace of mind."
Danzo nodded and slipped the Ring onto his finger, but his gaze flicked toward Kisame.
