Background

Madara was born into the Uchiha Clan during the Warring States Period. Even as a child, he was an exceptional fighter: he could contend with Gen, employ Fire Style techniques, and remain calm under pressure during sparring matches. His rapid growth was driven in part by the intense competition surrounding him, especially his rivalry with Gen and later Senju Hashirama 3 71.

As a teenager, Madara served as a battlefield commander during the Uchiha–Senju conflict. At about fifteen, he directed Uchiha forces with measured tactical judgment, preferring to wait for better intelligence before committing to a response 157. Following Tajima’s death, Madara, Izuna, and Gen awakened the Mangekyō Sharingan; Madara subsequently demonstrated that his Mangekyō could multiply the force of his ninjutsu 176 181.

After becoming Uchiha Clan Head, Madara sought to expand Uchiha influence and territory. His thinking gradually shifted from attempts at reconciliation with the Senju to a belief that the chaotic era could only end through overwhelming strength: defeat the Senju, then force a lasting settlement 188 241 319.

Izuna’s death devastated Madara and accelerated the deterioration of his Mangekyō vision. He accepted Izuna’s transplanted eyes both to restore his sight and to preserve his brother’s presence within himself, awakening the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan 427 440 441.

Appearance

Madara is depicted as a tall, imposing Uchiha with long black hair and a severe, naturally superior bearing.

  • Long, spiky black hair, often falling over one eye 157 1275.
  • Typically wears Uchiha red armor in battle 157 1026 1275.
  • Scarlet Sharingan and later patterned Mangekyō Sharingan; eventually awakens the pale Rinnegan 441 1026.
  • In his Six Paths state, wears a dark chakra robe and manifests nine Truth-Seeking Orbs 1324.

Personality

Madara is proud, intensely competitive, and driven by an uncompromising need to become stronger. He does not accept weakness as permanent; when his left Mangekyō becomes blind, he develops ways to continue using Susanoo rather than surrendering his combat ability 618 684.

He is direct and decisive in war, but not thoughtless. He can command troops efficiently, gather intelligence before acting, use clones to assess unknown threats, and escape through deception when brute force is insufficient 157 644 646. His confidence frequently borders on contempt for weaker opponents, particularly non-Uchiha enemies 304 496.

Despite this harshness, Madara is deeply attached to those he recognizes as his own. Izuna’s death changes the course of his life, and he entrusts his ambitions and knowledge to Obito near the end of his natural lifespan 440 1024. His relationship with Hashirama remains central to his identity: a mixture of childhood friendship, rivalry, resentment, and mutual recognition 2608 2661 2834.

  • Removes the previous need to ration ocular techniques due to blindness 346 441.
  • Enables the evolution of his Susanoo into its Complete Body form 346 452.
  • His left eye is later blinded after using Izanagi, though it begins recovering nearly two years later 618 623.

  • Employs Susanoo to devastate enemy formations and withstand coordinated attacks 330 497.
  • Activates Complete Body Susanoo, a giant armored form capable of battling Hashirama’s Wood Human Technique 452.

  • Creates black spikes refined through Rinnegan Yin–Yang Release 2913.
  • Uses Planetary Devastation to restrain Shanmen Shikao 3720.
  • Awakens Yang Style from ultimate Yin Release, achieving Six Paths-level power without relying on Hashirama Cells or becoming the Ten-Tails’ jinchūriki 1324.
  • Commands Truth-Seeking Orbs after reaching the Six Paths level 1324.

Wood Style

Madara later demonstrates Wood Style, including large-scale battlefield control.

  • Uses a Wood Style technique to overwhelm Otsutsuki opponents 792.
  • Employs Tree World Descent to create a forest, sustain his chakra, and form giant wooden constructs 3720 3721.

Taijutsu and Swordsmanship

Madara’s close-combat skill is the product of a lifetime of warfare.

  • Matched Gen’s child-level taijutsu and defeated the young Hashirama in a memorable fight 3 71.
  • Parried multiple Senju attacks while weaving hand seals in active combat 168.
  • His close-quarters instincts are described as having been forged through countless life-or-death battles since childhood 2156.
  • Learns and uses the Senju Clan’s Ghost-Slaying Slash 792.

  • Truth-Seeking Orbs — Nine orbs manifested after his Six Paths breakthrough 1324.
  • Sage Staff — Formed from a Truth-Seeking Orb; damaged during his clash with the Sage of Six Paths 1349.

Relationships

  • Uchiha Izuna — Younger brother and closest family bond. Izuna’s death devastates Madara; Madara receives Izuna’s eyes and views them as the power Izuna left behind 440 441.
  • Senju Hashirama — Childhood friend, lifelong rival, and recurring enemy. Their battles define much of Madara’s pursuit of power 303 452 2608 2834.
  • Uchiha Shin / Gen — Rival, trusted deputy, and later collaborator. Madara delegates clan affairs to Shin during seclusion and continues to cooperate with him across later plans 371 458 864.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Warring States Period

Madara emerges as one of the Uchiha’s most gifted young fighters, battles Gen as a friendly rival, and rises alongside Hashirama as the hope of his clan 3 98. He later becomes Clan Head and pursues Uchiha expansion through campaigns against southern clans 188 241.

Conflict with Hashirama

Madara repeatedly challenges Hashirama, using Mangekyō-amplified Fire Style, Susanoo, and eventually Complete Body Susanoo against Hashirama’s Wood Style 303 304 452. His conviction that peace requires absolute Uchiha strength becomes a driving motive behind his actions against the Senju 319.

Eternal Mangekyō and Konoha Era

Following Izuna’s death, Madara receives his brother’s eyes and awakens the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan 440 441. He later signs a ceasefire agreement with Hashirama and Shin, though his rivalry and personal pursuit of power remain unresolved 458.

Kumogakure Campaign

With one eye impaired, Madara fights the First Raikage, Ginkaku, Kinkaku, and Kumogakure’s forces. He steals the Amber Purifying Pot containing the Eight-Tails, survives encirclement through genjutsu and stealth, and refuses to abandon his prize despite the danger 643 644 646.

Isolation, Rinnegan, and Succession

Madara isolates himself underground, sustains his aging body through the Demonic Statue, cultivates White Zetsu, and awakens the Rinnegan 864. He gives the Rinnegan to Nagato as both an experiment and a revival contingency, then trains Obito to inherit his plans and identity 930 1024.

Revival and Six Paths Ascension

Revived through Impure World Reincarnation, Madara returns to the battlefield as the real Uchiha Madara, distinct from Obito’s masked impersonation 1274 1275. He later reaches the Six Paths level through his own awakening of Yang Style, manifesting Truth-Seeking Orbs and a unique chakra robe 1324.
