A sharp, piercing alarm echoed throughout Impel Down's underground levels, and every guard force was mobilized.
Many people were hearing this sound for the first time, but that did not stop them from understanding what had happened. Someone had escaped from prison.
Over the hundreds of years since its construction, Impel Down had imprisoned countless pirates, including no small number of great pirates.
It was not as though no one had ever attempted an escape, but without exception, every attempt had ended in failure. And with every prison break, the city's defenses and containment systems became even more thorough.
Until the past hundred years, no similar escape had occurred again.
"Damn it, who the hell escaped? Don't let me catch you!" Magellan, the prison warden, snarled furiously as he rapidly led the guards out.
This prison possessed formidable defensive forces. Magellan himself had strength no less than that of an Admiral, and together with the defenses on every level and the prison itself, it had become an inescapable dead zone.
But clearly, Impel Down's legend was about to be shattered this time.
Because in all its hundreds of years, this prison had never held a pirate of Golden Lion's caliber. They had no idea what it was like when a pirate of that level got serious.
So by the time Magellan swiftly organized his forces to intercept Shiki, the man had already broken through several underground levels of Impel Down in succession and was charging straight for the surface!
