Its population was sparse, and there was almost no arable land. Cities existed only around a few large oases, while water was an exceedingly scarce resource. Nor did it possess any resources worth exporting—after all, the ninja world had no need for something like oil.
Thus, Sunagakure had earned a nickname in the early days of the shinobi world: "the oversized beggar." To sum it up in one word: poor. It was precisely because of this that, whenever war broke out, large or small, Sunagakure would usually stick its foot in. After all, war profits were the easiest to make. The most famous example was naturally the Second Shinobi World War, when it suddenly launched an attack while Konoha and Kumogakure were at war, making a fortune in the process.
Ever since then, Konoha had given Sunagakure another name: "the shit-stirrer of the shinobi world," a label that quickly gained recognition from the other major villages.

Its own main battlefield had yet to see any breakthrough, yet it still sent men to the Land of Rain to join the chaos, making an already confused situation even more chaotic.
