During the Warring States period in Inuyasha, clans fought for hegemony. Although these clans were not particularly powerful, they were numerous. For a time, wars for dominance erupted everywhere across the land.
These wars usually held little practical meaning. Not only did they fail to bring even partial unification during the Warring States period, they instead increased the number of conflicts and the suffering of the people.
Most of these wars were caused by the selfish ambitions of powerful figures in Inuyasha.
However, despite the constant wars between Feudal Lords, even the powerful Feudal Lords who could achieve their desires regardless of ordinary people's deaths still had something to fear.
That was demons!
There were many yokai during the Warring States period. Weak monsters were stronger than ordinary people, while powerful ones could easily wipe out a small army. Some exceptionally powerful great monsters could slaughter an entire city as easily as drinking water.
Their power system differed from that of Hokage. In Hokage, ninjas possessed powerful abilities composed of three aspects: ninjutsu, genjutsu, and taijutsu.
But monsters were different. They relied on bizarre spells, enormous bodies, powerful weapons, and, of course, all kinds of strange abilities.
Monsters were divided into the following ranks: lesser yokai, monster, old monster, and great yokai. Compared to the power levels in Hokage, they were roughly as follows:
"The strength of a lesser demon is approximately equivalent to a genin, a monster = chunin, an old monster = jonin, and a great demon = Shadow level."
This comparison might be somewhat biased, but it was not entirely inaccurate.
