Background

Founding

Hogwarts was conceived in the Middle Ages, when wizards faced persecution, betrayal, and execution by Muggles and the Church. The four founders chose the land between the Black Lake and Forbidden Forest to establish a school “far from the prying eyes of Muggles.” 237

Each founder contributed through a separate path:

Founders' division

The founders initially shared the goal of protecting wizards, but their beliefs later diverged. Slytherin opposed admitting half-blood and Muggle-born students, while the other founders accepted them as the magical population changed; he ultimately left Hogwarts after clashing with Gryffindor. 238

Despite later rumors, Hogwarts was never Slytherin’s personal property. Dumbledore states that the castle belongs to no one. 237

Magical Systems

Admission and protection

The Book of Admittance and Quill of Acceptance record the names of children within Hogwarts’ range when they experience accidental magic. After a student is Sorted, Hogwarts recognizes them as a member and protects them as they grow. 237

Hogwarts’ foundational magic is described as impartial: it does not favor a House, student, professor, or even the Headmaster. 238

Castle contracts and stored magic

Every student who enters Hogwarts forms a contract with the castle. In exchange for protection and education, the castle absorbs magic that overflows during their development and stores it within its vast internal magical array. 340

Breeze later perceives the castle’s walls as covered in constantly pulsing magical patterns. He concludes that Hogwarts gains power from the magic and emotions its students unconsciously release. 270

Sentient magic

Hogwarts contains autonomous magical systems and sentient facilities. Faner, a Bronze Snake Lamp housed in the hidden East Tower, explains that Hogwarts will not harm a young wizard, even though Faner itself is not a creation of the castle. 15

The castle can also respond to powerful founder-related magic. When Ravenclaw attempts to activate Hogwarts during the final crisis, the castle trembles in response; its great doors later open to Breeze and the defenders. 340

Grounds and Structure

Hogwarts is a massive castle across the Black Lake, marked by numerous towers and starlit windows. It has one underground floor and eight main floors, with additional towers above them. 6 14

Defenses and Security

• During the Werewolf invasion, Hogwarts’ professors combined defensive spells into a vast barrier around the castle. Professor McGonagall also animated the castle’s statues into armed defenders. 217
• Breeze later used the Forbidden Forest Contract to conceal Hogwarts, the Black Lake, and the Forbidden Forest from the outside world. Under this barrier, only the Headmaster and Heads of House could open the entrance. 302
• The concealment sealed external passages and blocked ordinary teleportation into Hogwarts; Hagrid was assigned to manage mail at the barrier’s edge. 302
