Ambush

The Epoch Clan soldiers' weapon combinations gave the impression of being impenetrable, their defenses watertight. But while air cannons and ultrasonic weapons were area-of-effect weapons, they only inflicted planar damage; they were nowhere near capable of 360-degree, all-angle defense. And that gave the Zerg an opening to attack.

An Epoch Clan soldier who had been fighting gleefully suddenly screamed. A sharp spike shot up from underground and pierced straight through his leg bone. The combat suit's multilayered defenses seemed to have done nothing, punctured as easily as tofu. At the same time, at least five other Epoch Clan soldiers came under attack. Aside from one lucky survivor, the rest were injured to varying degrees.

"Get airborne!" To reduce the area they needed to defend, most Epoch Clan soldiers had chosen to land on the ground. But they had not expected that even the underground, which they had thought safe, was unsafe.

The wounded Epoch Clan soldier was still screaming. The blade that had pierced through him had a hook-shaped structure at its tip, making it impossible for him to break free unless he abandoned his leg.

The attacker was hidden beneath the surface, and its full form could not be seen. The Epoch Clan soldiers aimed their guns downward, but with the ground providing cover, interdiction weapons were not very effective against underground targets.

The soldier reacted swiftly, reaching out to draw a tactical short blade. His right leg had been pierced by the spike, leaving his whole body suspended in midair.

Enduring the agonizing pain, he bent down and slashed. The blade tore apart the muscles in his leg, even shattering much of the bone. The soldier let out an involuntary scream, his body hanging upside down.
