Background / History

Hui lived with Naruto in Konoha from an early age and was subjected to the village's hostility toward both of them. Her mother was named Hongye and had no surname; Hui is left questioning what Hongye did to make villagers view her so divisively. 3

When Naruto was attacked by several children, Hui intervened despite being badly outnumbered. She was knocked into the river and nearly drowned before Itachi Uchiha rescued her. 4 During her hospitalization, Hui again encountered Zhan, an evil entity born from her hatred and connected to her Uzumaki bloodline. 5

Driven by a need to protect Naruto, herself, and Konoha, Hui began training with Naruto and Rock Lee. She struggled to use chakra at first, sought Itachi's guidance, and eventually learned the Substitution Technique. 3 9 11

Orochimaru later drew Hui away from Konoha to train under him. His training was brutal: Kimimaro drilled her in combat, Orochimaru developed her Wind Release, and Qingsi treated her frequent injuries. Hui also served as a hunter, capturing people for Orochimaru's experiments, which increasingly conflicted with her conscience. 13 14 17

After her Mind's Eye of the Kagura awakened, Hui returned to Konoha, concealing much of her training and avoiding Orochimaru's techniques while under surveillance. She resumed her bond with Naruto and pursued medical ninjutsu through Qingsi's books, Nonō, and Kabuto. 19 20 23

Hui later traveled to Sunagakure, where she befriended Gaara and tried to give him moments of ordinary childhood. She left him a scroll of techniques and a jade pendant engraved with the character for “Love” before departing the village. 32 38 39

Following an ambush and capture by bounty hunters and a black-market figure, Hui escaped her seal with Hidden Shadow Snake Hands and summoned Orochimaru for aid. She subsequently strengthened her summoning and Wind Release techniques, then was placed with Anko to help manage one of Orochimaru's island facilities. 44 46 47 48

Appearance

Hui is a petite girl with black eyes. As a younger child, she has visible baby fat and is often mistaken for a boy; after Orochimaru's training, she grows taller and develops a colder, more snake-like aura. 11 19 32

Personality

Hui is determined, patient, and intensely protective of the people she considers hers, particularly Naruto. Her desire for strength begins as a wish to protect herself, Naruto, and Konoha, but Orochimaru's training pushes her toward fear, isolation, and moral compromise. 3 13 17

Despite her guarded demeanor, Hui remains compassionate. She helps bullied children, gives Sakura study notes, encourages Rock Lee to embrace taijutsu, and seeks medical ninjutsu so she can heal others. 21 23 27

Her greatest internal conflict is Zhan. Hui recognizes the entity as an embodiment of her hatred and repeatedly asserts that Zhan will not control her body or erase her sense of self. 5 33 Under pressure, however, Hui can become frighteningly cold and ruthless, resembling Orochimaru in both aura and conduct. 29 48 50
