Background / History

Neji's body is inhabited by the soul of a Naruto fan from Earth, who transmigrated into him at age five and awakened the Strongest Proficiency System. The system converts repeated practice into proficiency, allowing Neji to improve techniques through relentless training. 1

As a member of the Hyuga Clan's Branch Family, Neji is restricted by the Caged Bird curse mark and supposedly has no right to learn the Eight Trigrams palm techniques. He conceals his actual strength, causing the clan to dismiss him as a talentless failure and making him a frequent target of Gintoki and Aota's bullying. 1 3

Neji's early goal is to grow strong enough to change the Branch Family's fate while protecting Hinata from the clan's hostility. His clashes with Gintoki and Aota force him to reveal Rotation, beginning the collapse of his “failure” reputation. 1 2 3

During the Chunin Exams, Neji repeatedly acts under an Anbu mask to conceal his identity while confronting threats including Orochimaru, Kabuto Yakushi, Baki, and the Sound Ninja. His interventions expose him to real combat far beyond normal genin level, rapidly accelerating his system progress. 13 18 20 35

After Hayate Gekko's death, Neji trades his intelligence on the planned attack against Konoha to Hiruzen Sarutobi in exchange for information on Hyuga Tenin and the clan's missing ancestral scroll. He agrees to assist Konoha while pursuing the truth behind the Hyuga Clan's division and lost power. 45 46

Appearance

Neji is a thirteen-year-old Hyuga genin with the Byakugan and the Caged Bird seal on his forehead. He is described as having long hair, which he hides when operating under an Anbu mask. 2 13 31

  • Bandage-wrapped hands from continual palm-technique training. 1
  • Veins swell around his eyes when his Byakugan is activated. 1 23
  • Uses a recovered Anbu mask and uniform to conceal his identity during covert battles. 13 21
  • Bears a wound on the inside of his left arm after fighting Baki. 34 50

Personality

Neji is intensely disciplined and treats training as a daily necessity rather than a temporary means to gain power. He practices from morning until night, repeats individual techniques thousands of times, and continues training even while injured. 1 30 37 50

He is analytical in battle, constantly evaluating technique range, chakra consumption, elemental matchups, and his opponents' habits. He recognizes that his greatest weakness against jonin-level opponents is not raw power but practical combat experience. 12 34 50

Although Neji initially prioritizes concealing his strength, he is protective of others—especially Hinata—and repeatedly risks exposure to save allies and defend Konoha. He restrains himself from killing Gintoki and Aota despite having the power to do so. 9 16 31 44

“In a real ninja battle, there are no rules!” 4

“Of course. That is precisely why I came.” 46

Abilities & Skills

Strongest Proficiency System

Neji's system grants proficiency through repeated practice and provides larger gains for real combat against dangerous opponents. It also grants milestone rewards, including chakra attributes, items, ninjutsu, and special talents. 1 2 14 49

  • A newly learned technique must be repeated 10,000 times against a stake before it can be properly used. 2
  • Real combat substantially increases proficiency, as shown by his gains after fighting Orochimaru. 14
  • Completion of the novice stage unlocks the Proficiency Consumption System. 49

Power of Stealing and Devouring

Unlocked after Neji completes the system's novice stage, this talent allows him to potentially acquire abilities from stronger opponents. 49

  • Can activate only when fighting a ninja of higher rank than Neji. 49
  • Stolen abilities begin at zero proficiency and must still be trained personally. 49
  • Neji can retain up to two devoured abilities at once; acquiring another requires clearing an existing one. 49
  • The capacity increases as his ninja rank rises. 49

Byakugan

Neji's Byakugan grants near-360-degree vision and allows him to observe chakra flow, pressure points, hidden enemies, and elemental chakra left inside an opponent's body. 1 23

  • Detects incoming attacks from blind angles and supports his evasive footwork. 1 9
  • Lets him identify the lightning-natured chakra still lodged in Zaku's body. 23
  • At the Novice realm, allows him to perceive chakra activity within roughly a hundred-meter radius. 35
  • His recorded Byakugan Purity reaches 13% after the Sixty-Four Palms breakthrough. 44

Gentle Fist and Tenketsu Strikes

Neji channels chakra through palm strikes to disrupt an enemy's chakra network and seal specific acupoints. 4 16

  • Suppresses Gintoki's Danzhong point, preventing him from condensing chakra. 31
  • Strikes Oboro's teammates' pressure points while fighting with his eyes closed. 12
  • Uses chakra-infused palm techniques capable of disrupting Orochimaru's chakra. 13
  • Can combine Gentle Fist with Lightning Release to numb targets and obstruct their movement. 18 50

Eight Trigrams Techniques

Neji has developed and refined several advanced Hyuga techniques despite Branch Family restrictions. 1 4

  • Eight Trigrams Palms: Heavenly Spin / Rotation — Releases chakra from the body's pressure points to create a spinning defensive barrier; later enhanced with Wind Style chakra. 1 2
  • Eight Trigrams Sixty-Four Palms — A rapid sequence of chakra-point strikes; Neji creates a Lightning Style version that seals Orochimaru's chakra and immobilizes him. 4 18
  • Eight Trigrams Vacuum Palm — A ranged chakra burst that can strike targets at a distance, though Neji notes its force diminishes through air resistance. 6 12
  • Eight Trigrams: Body Strike — Releases chakra from the entire body in a close-range burst, allowing Neji to escape restraints and break Gaara's Armor of Sand. 27 28
  • Two Palms — A new palm technique used alongside Air Palm to defeat Oboro's team. 12

Chakra Nature Transformation

Neji gains Wind and Lightning chakra transformations through the system and incorporates them into traditionally non-elemental Hyuga techniques. 2 5

  • Wind Style Rotation — Wind-infused Rotation is described as at least ten times stronger than his original version, though he can initially perform it only around twelve times consecutively. 2
  • Lightning Style: Eight Trigrams Sixty-Four Palms — Injects lightning chakra into an opponent through early strikes, then exploits the paralysis to complete the sequence. 18
  • Wind Style: Gale Palm — An A-Rank ninjutsu selected after his Rotation reaches 30,000 proficiency. 37
  • Wind Release: Palm Wave — A combined ninjutsu-taijutsu technique created by integrating Gale Palm with Vacuum Palm; it causes major destruction while using only 20% of Neji's chakra. 48 49
  • Neji cannot yet perform true chakra shape transformation because chakra becomes blocked at his acupoints without a sufficiently large chakra reserve. 48

Sensory and Evasion Training

Neji has trained himself to evade attacks without relying on the Byakugan. 12

  • Uses sound, air movement, and instinct to detect kunai and hidden attackers with his eyes closed. 12
  • His eyes-closed footwork surpasses his usual Byakugan-assisted movement against Oboro's team. 12

Medical Knowledge

Neji possesses practical knowledge of medicinal herbs from clan instruction. 16

  • Identifies and gathers antidotal herbs in the Forest of Death. 16
  • Provides Tenten with rare Time-Crow Fern to treat poisoning. 16
  • Uses special Crow Fern herbs to neutralize toxins, dispel fatigue, and resist drowsiness. 16

Equipment / Items

  • Anbu mask and uniform — Taken from Yugao and used to hide his identity while intervening against Orochimaru, the Sound Ninja, and Baki's group. 13 20 21
  • Explosive Tags — Received as a system reward after reaching Gentle Fist: Tenketsu Mastery. 16
  • Military Ration Pills — Used to restore stamina during high-risk combat. 16 17 34
  • Crow Fern Special Herbs — System-granted herbs that counter toxins, fatigue, and drowsiness. 16
  • Advanced Water Release Ninjutsu Scroll — Received upon completing the novice stage. 49
  • Advanced Earth Release Ninjutsu Scroll — Received upon completing the novice stage. 49
  • Basic Sealing Technique Scroll — Received upon completing the novice stage. 49

  • Hyuga Hinata — His younger cousin and closest emotional connection within the clan. Neji protects her from danger, supports her growth, and confronts the elders when she is threatened with confinement. 2 9 23 44
  • Might Guy — Neji's jonin instructor. Guy is shocked by Neji's hidden ability but approves his participation in the Chunin Exams after Neji wins the bell test through a feint. 3 4
  • Rock Lee — Teammate who defends Neji when Kabuto dismisses him as weak and openly respects Neji's work ethic. 6 16
  • Tenten — Teammate and sparring partner. She initially underestimates Neji, then comes to respect his strength and joins his training. 37 38
  • Asuma Sarutobi — Advanced instructor who teaches Neji chakra transformation and recognizes his potential; their real-combat spar reveals Neji's lack of jonin-level experience. 47 50
  • Ino Yamanaka — Training companion who develops romantic feelings for Neji after he gives her a flower from her mother. 47
  • Hyuga Hiashi — Clan head and Neji's uncle. He expresses concern for Neji's safety and places significant hope in his potential. 31 38 46
  • Hyuga Hizashi — Neji's deceased father. Haru compares Neji's diligence to Hizashi's, while Orochimaru considers Neji's talent greater than Hizashi's. 30 17
  • Hyuga Haru — Hinata's attendant and a former close acquaintance of Hizashi. She privately calls Neji “Young Master Neji” and supports him despite clan hierarchy. 30
  • Hyuga Gintoki and Hyuga Aota — Older Hyuga relatives who bully and antagonize Neji until his rapidly growing strength leaves them fearful of him. 1 31 44
  • Gaara — Chunin Exam opponent and recurring rival. Neji defeats him in the arena and again during the village crisis; Gaara later acknowledges Neji as a formidable opponent. 28 32 36
  • Orochimaru — A powerful enemy whom Neji confronts repeatedly under an Anbu disguise. Orochimaru identifies Neji as a Hyuga and takes interest in his bloodline and unusual techniques. 13 18 41
  • Hayate Gekko — Ally Neji rescues while trying to expose the Sand and Sound alliance. Hayate discovers Neji's masked identity before being killed by Orochimaru. 35 36
  • Hiruzen Sarutobi — The Third Hokage. Neji negotiates with him for Hyuga Clan history in return for intelligence on Konoha's enemies, and Hiruzen agrees to protect Neji's secret. 45 46

Story Role / Major Arcs

Hidden Strength and Clan Conflict

Neji begins as the Hyuga Branch Family's publicly dismissed “failure,” secretly using his system to master forbidden Eight Trigrams techniques. After defeating Gintoki and Aota with Heavenly Spin, he accepts a clan wager requiring him to place first in the Chunin Exams or face punishment. 1 2 5

Chunin Exams

After defeating Might Guy in the bell test, Neji enters the exams and assists Rock Lee and Tenten during the written test with his Byakugan. In the Forest of Death, he protects Hinata, defeats Oboro's team, and develops techniques through increasingly dangerous battles. 4 7 9 12

Masked Intervention Against Orochimaru

Gaara and the Konoha Crisis

Neji defeats Gaara by exhausting his sand defenses and breaking through with Body Strike. During the later village crisis, he defeats Gaara again with Lightning Style: Eight Trigrams Sixty-Four Palms and chooses to protect Konoha despite his resentment toward the clan system. 28 32

Pursuit of the Hyuga Clan's Secrets

Advanced Training Under Asuma
