Asuma arrives at the training ground to oversee a two-week special-training period for Neji, Tenten, and the Ino–Shika–Cho trio. He takes charge of their schedules, insists that non-participants in the upcoming Chunin Exams should train as well, and frames the program as preparation for future examinations and real combat. 39

After Special Jonin Hayate Gekko's murder, Asuma organizes a serious sparring session. He tells the genin that sparring must be treated as real combat out of respect for one’s opponent and as necessary preparation even during peacetime. 40

He personally evaluates the group at Training Ground 21, identifying Shikamaru as the strongest overall among his original students while noting that every student except Neji has significant openings in movement and footwork. He then tests Neji directly and recognizes his exceptional speed, footwork, and taijutsu. 42
