A brief look at the Land of Fire's area

To study how large the area is, we first need to understand the question of speed.

Just how fast can ninjas travel?

First, there's a basic premise: a ninja's body is made up of 10 trillion cells, while an Earthling's body has 40 to 50 trillion. With nearly three times as many cells at the same height, even ordinary people in the ninja world would crush Earthlings in strength and speed. The world record for the 100-meter dash on Earth is nine seconds; in the Naruto world, even official athletes probably wouldn't qualify.

Then there's the boost from Chakra. Chakra is a supernatural power. Attaching it to the body increases movement speed. We can see that Ninja Academy students who've just graduated, barely in their teens, can already run up walls and across rooftops, almost like they're teleporting.

Adult ninjas are only faster still.

One fanfic author set Ninja Academy students' speed as faster than a train, or 00–00k per hour. I think that figure is fairly reasonable. Here's how I arrived at it.

A marathon is 4195 long, about 4 kilometers. Earthlings can finish the whole race in under [time missing]. Rock Lee, a Konoha Genin, could run five hundred laps around the village on his hands. This shows that, for a ninja, the word "fatigue" doesn't really apply to ordinary running. And Bolt's 100-meter record of 9.6 seconds works out to 7 kilometers per hour.

Ordinary people in Naruto have three times the physical capabilities of Earthlings. A Ninja Academy student could slaughter a hundred ordinary people, and an elite ninja could slaughter ordinary Genin just as easily.

You can't simply multiply speed, but multiplying it by ten when moving at full speed is definitely reasonable. Doubling it for a long march is reasonable, too.

From this, we can estimate that a ninja's long-distance marching speed is about 70k/h, roughly the speed of a car. At full speed, it's about 70k/h, roughly the speed of a modern high-speed train.

It takes three [time units missing] to travel from Konoha to the Land of Sand. At a steady pace of 8 hours per [time unit missing], that's 70 * 8 * [time units missing] = 1,680 kilometers. China is about 5,500 kilometers from north to south, so Konoha must be about a quarter of China's size.

But given the context and the emergency they faced, Kakashi was an elite ninja. He obviously wouldn't travel at the pace of an ordinary ninja, nor would he run for just 8 hours each [time unit missing]. He might have rested for 7 hours and eaten for half an hour, making it entirely possible for his speed to reach 100k/h. That would make the distance 100 * 165 * [time units missing] = 4,950 kilometers.

Great, Konoha is now as big as China.

Pain also said that destroying a country would require killing hundreds of millions of people. Judging by what we've seen of the Land of Fire, most places are vast, sparsely populated, and covered in dense forests. If there are still hundreds of millions of people there, then it's entirely possible that its area is as large as China's.

Some might say, "Then why are there only a hundred thousand soldiers in a war? If it's as big as China, that makes no sense!"

One thing needs to be clear: the concept of a ninja is completely different from that of an ordinary person. Ninjas are superpowered beings. In China, they'd be cultivators. Having ten thousand cultivators in a population of a hundred million is perfectly normal—a one-in-ten-thousand chance!

This war involving a hundred thousand people wasn't an ordinary war. It was a war between supernatural beings. Comparing it to clashes between ninja villages during Japan's Warring States Period is imprecise, unreasonable, and unscientific. It completely discards the setting and looks only at the numbers.

Though Konoha is large among the Five Great Nations, the other countries aren't far behind. Together, they'd cover about 80 million square kilometers—more than half of Earth's land area.

Now, let's discuss Mount Myōboku. It takes a month to get there, but does that mean walking leisurely or traveling at a steady pace?

Those were the Toad Sage's words to Naruto. Judging by the context, he was clearly estimating based on Naruto's speed. And Naruto obviously wasn't wandering aimlessly; he had a specific destination and was trying to reach it quickly.

So the speed should still be calculated at 70k/h. Given Naruto's high endurance, the actual figure might be even higher.

At 70k/h, traveling for 16 hours a day and using the remaining 8 hours to sleep and eat, the distance from Mount Myōboku to Konoha would be 70 * 16 * [days missing] = 600 kilometers. Earth's circumference is 40,000 kilometers.

Clearly, those 600 kilometers are the shortest distance. That means the circumference of the planet in the Naruto world must be greater than 6,700 kilometers.

This is a planet larger than Earth. Its inhabitants evolved stronger physical capabilities to withstand the greater gravity, and humans of the same size have three times the cell density of Earthlings.

That's also why removing a piece of this planet to form a moon would have little effect on the planet itself. Even its orbit and such would remain stable.

And because the planet is so conspicuous, it would be easy for the Otsutsuki Clan to spot it in the vast universe. They specifically planted God Trees to harvest Chakra from planets.

Another indication that this planet is larger than Earth: if the ninja world were really smaller than Japan, the planet's gravity would probably be only a fraction of Earth's.

With the physical capabilities ninjas have, why run along trees at all? Wouldn't flying be faster?
