Background / History
Flender was the Corner of Wisdom of the Golden Iron Triangle and an old companion of Yu Xiaogang and Liu Erlong. He loved Liu Erlong but withdrew from their romantic conflict. Yu Xiaogang’s subsequent abandonment of her became a lasting source of resentment 93.
After leaving Liu Erlong and abandoning the Golden Iron Triangle’s name, Flender considered ending his life. Meeting Ma Hongjun gave him a reason to continue. His disciple eventually became as important to him as a biological son 160 161.
Flender founded Shrek Academy and remained involved in its administration and teaching for decades. Li Yusong joined as a teacher after its establishment, while Zhao Wuji served as vice dean. Flender’s commitment to frugality extended to using his office as his residence 93 97 293.
Appearance
Flender wears rustic clothing and black-framed glasses, with a hooked nose and small eyes that occasionally gleam sharply. Cao Yan’s first impression is of a cunning, potentially dangerous man 97.
- Face: Purple-toned and fleshy 97.
- Ordinary Martial Soul manifestation: Owl wings extending behind his back 97.
- Martial Soul Avatar: Dazzling golden light and golden owl wings 303.
- Owl Curse activation: Eyes turn ink-black as dark energy surrounds him 304.
Personality
Flender is frugal, stern with students, and proud of his academy. His attachment to Ma Hongjun is particularly strong: his disciple’s death overwhelms his judgment and makes him willing to risk his life against the Dai Family despite his colleagues’ warnings 93 160 161.
His conduct changes sharply according to another person’s strength and backing. He insults Tang San’s Blue Silver Grass and ten-year Soul Ring, then promises protection after recognizing the Clear Sky Hammer and Tang Hao’s lineage. With Cao Yan, he repeatedly kneels, follows orders, and even thanks him after being threatened and injured 93 94 97 290.
Flender condemns Dai Mubai and Oscar for harming fellow students, yet later commits the same kind of abuse himself. After Liu Erlong rejects him, his professed affection becomes entitlement: he threatens her, attacks her, and uses hypnosis to overcome her resistance 127 140 302 303 304.

Story Role / Major Arcs
Tang San’s Admission
Tang San visits Flender expecting assistance from his teacher’s old friend. Recognizing the belt Twenty-Four Bridges Moonlight Night, Flender instead erupts over Yu Xiaogang’s treatment of Liu Erlong. He injures Tang San and dismisses his Blue Silver Grass and Soul Ring quality 93.
The revelation of the Clear Sky Hammer reverses his treatment. Flender accepts Tang San and promises protection, privately acknowledging that he cannot afford to provoke Clear Sky Douluo’s son. This does not soften his resentment toward Grandmaster 94.
Transfer of Shrek Academy
After witnessing Cao Yan’s level 99 Soul Power, unusual flames, and 100,000-year Soul Ring, Flender kneels and relinquishes the headmaster’s position. He names himself vice dean and places all academy affairs under Cao Yan’s authority. He also asks Cao Yan to treat Ma Hongjun’s evil fire 96 97.
Flender warns the students not to offend their new leader and continues handling teaching duties. When Dai Mubai attacks Ma Hongjun and targets Cao Yan, he intervenes furiously, with particular alarm at the danger of provoking a Peerless Douluo 98 127 129.
Ma Hongjun’s Death and Revenge
Dai Mubai forcibly removes Ma Hongjun’s Soul Bone, leaving him mortally wounded. Flender holds his dying disciple and blames himself for arriving too late. He orders Shrek’s teachers to accompany him against the Dai Family despite warnings about their overwhelming strength 160 161.
After Cao Yan offers assistance, Flender accompanies him and Zhu Zhuqing to the Star Luo Empire. Before the Zhu Family, he publicly accuses Dai Mubai of killing his disciple and offers to swear on his Martial Soul that the accusation is true 168 188.
Shrek Academy’s Disbandment
The remaining teachers lose faith in the academy after the misconduct of Dai Mubai and Oscar. Li Yusong, Zhao Wuji, and Shao Xin leave to become independent Soul Masters, while Flender watches the institution he founded dissolve 293.
Flender kneels before Cao Yan and accepts blame for its downfall. Although Ma Hongjun’s blood feud has been avenged, his death remains an enduring wound. The prospect of visiting Blue Tyrant Academy revives Flender’s spirits because its dean is Liu Erlong 294.
Rejection and Death
At Blue Tyrant Academy, Flender hopes to renew his relationship with Liu Erlong. He tries to interest her in Yu Xiaogang’s killer, expecting her grief to turn her against Cao Yan, but she no longer wishes to dwell on Xiaogang. She tells Flender plainly that she considers him only a friend 301.
Unable to accept rejection, Flender threatens and attacks her outside the academy. When her Martial Soul Avatar overcomes his direct assault, he resorts to Owl Curse. Cao Yan intervenes before Flender can complete the assault and pierces his chest 302 303 304 305.
Mortally wounded, Flender admits that he wronged Liu Erlong and repeatedly begs Cao Yan for a quick death 305.
