Background / History
Amasawa awakened Induction on the day his younger sister, Amasawa Ichika, was born. His supernatural ability attracted Ayanokoji Atsuomi’s attention, leading to his placement in the White Room 1.
He found the White Room stifling and entertained himself by using mental suggestions on classmates and supervisors. Their reactions gradually became duller as the experiments continued. Ayanokoji Kiyoko stood out as the only person he remembered after leaving, and the only one ordinarily unaffected by his ability 1.
Kiyoko repeatedly summoned him to her room, where she would silently observe him before allowing him to leave. One such meeting lasted three hours. Amasawa eventually deliberately triggered an incident to leave the White Room; he also describes his departure as an expulsion 1 8.
During Sakayanagi Arisu’s childhood visit to the White Room, Amasawa compelled her to stand and then gave her a handcrafted wooden walking stick. She retained the cane and recognized him when they reunited in Class 1-A 3 5.
Appearance
- Hair: Black, with uneven bangs falling over his forehead 2 21.
- Eyes: Pale gray; they acquire a turbid glow when Induction activates 2 14.
- Voice: Usually calm and controlled; he can use it to deliver mental suggestions 6 14.
- Clothing: Wears the school uniform and lends his blazer to Morishita Ran when she is soaked and distressed 26.
Personality
Amasawa’s composed exterior contrasts with an excitable, sarcastic inner monologue. He deliberately cultivates an aloof, mysterious image, but Kiyoko’s unexpected affection quickly unsettles him. His thoughts frequently frame events through games, anime, and other fictional references 1 2 19.
His confidence rests partly on being a natural esper. He regards his power as a gift bestowed by the heavens and often treats other people’s reactions as entertainment. He provokes Kushida Kikyo into exposing her concealed hostility, manipulates classroom incidents, and repeatedly pressures Horikita Suzune into apologizing 7 8 11 23 29.
Despite his willingness to dominate others, he also offers practical protection and reassurance. He rescues Ran from drowning, intervenes when Horikita Manabu attacks Suzune, and comforts Ran when her fear of rejection surfaces. He dislikes crowded settings and often leaves public-facing class business to Arisu 6 11 14 16 26.
Abilities & Skills
Induction
Amasawa’s innate supernatural ability influences what others perceive, think, feel, and do 1.
- Perception manipulation: Can redirect another person’s line of sight so that he disappears from their awareness 1.
- Belief manipulation: Can make people believe or disbelieve something 1.
- Behavioral suggestions: Makes Arisu answer roll call enthusiastically and manipulates Kamuro Masumi’s actions to win a classroom bet 4 23.
- Emotional influence: Calms Arisu when her excitement threatens her health and reassures distressed classmates 6 26.
- Exposing concealed feelings: Brings a small portion of Kushida’s genuine hostility to the surface beneath her friendly performance 7.
- Dream manipulation: Makes Ran believe she is fighting him while she is actually asleep; the experience becomes a nightmare despite his intention to provide a dream sparring match 5.
Mass Induction and Full-Power Mind Control
Induction can affect multiple people simultaneously and includes a full-power mind-control application 1 6 26.
- Uses full-power mental Induction on Class A to prevent students from noticing anything amiss during Ran’s self-introduction 6.
- Sends a gentle mental influence throughout the school building to keep others from noticing him and Ran during a private moment 26.
- Initially states that he has avoided full-power mind control since his younger sister forced him to use it once; the Class A incident is described as his second use since childhood 1 6.
Activation and Limitations
- Eye contact: His eyes glow during several direct suggestions 2.
- Voice: Eye contact is not required; he can induce someone through speech alone 6.
- Interruption: Kiyoko’s sudden kiss breaks off his attempted suggestion to Kushida 2.
- Kiyoko’s resistance: His ordinary Induction repeatedly fails on her. Amasawa attributes his inability to induce her feelings to her apparent lack of emotion 1 2 8.
- Full-power exception remains unconfirmed: He considers mind control a possible alternative, but the cited encounters do not establish that he successfully controls Kiyoko at full power 1 2.
Martial Arts and Physical Resilience
- Evades Ran’s punches and sweep, catches her wrist with two fingers, and uses leverage to numb her arm 4.
- Neutralizes Manabu’s force through minimal movement and pressure-point strikes, supplementing the encounter with Induction 14.
- Survives being embedded deeply in a tree and returns to class after freeing himself and coughing up blood 3.
- His apparent victory over Ran is not solely a physical defeat: he subsequently explains that he put her to sleep and induced an imagined fight 4 5.
Swimming and Rescue
- Performs a rescue when Ran begins drowning during a freestyle race 16.
- Declines the boys’ race rather than publicly demonstrate his ability for a 5,000-point prize 16.
Analysis and Negotiation
- Recognizes the cafeteria’s free supplies as a warning that students may later lack points 7.
- Investigates the point system, Class A’s graduation benefits, and the 20-million-point class-transfer requirement 9.
- Infers a possible island-survival exam from the introduction of swimming lessons 13.
- Uses private points, alliances, and Student Council authority to secure influence across class boundaries 12 18 27.
School Evaluation
His preliminary assessment recommends Class A while identifying teamwork outside authoritarian roles as a weakness 9.
