Rout
While Fran was speaking with Finley, Anna's party was already waiting River Valley City.
Anna's eyes were fixed on the tightly closed city gates and the soldiers on the city walls who dared not peek out. She could hardly contain herself.
She turned back to look at the hastily recruited believers and asked:
"Are you all ready yet? Although the soldiers on the city wall dare not show their faces now, you still need to hurry."
Upon hearing Anna's urging, several believers dressed in gray robes quickened their pace, instructing those dressed in coarse cloth to check and load their weapons.
After waiting a short while, Anna decided to open the city gates first, and then she gave orders.
"Activate that... weapon that the Proxy specifically instructed us to bring. Now is the time."
Anna's gaze fell upon the enormous, dark object, which was at least two meters long, with a huge, thick black pipe pointing straight toward the city gate.
This was Breech-loading Smoothbore Cannon that Fran had specially rushed to make; she knew they were going to attack a city. Although the name of the River Valley City contained the word "city," in this medieval context, it was easy to guess.
A small lord's town with a thousand people is considered quite good, and such a size obviously cannot support the construction of a large city wall.
Even above the city walls, many sections were constructed using stacked wooden materials, which was more than sufficient for them to defend against arrows and the like.
Even now, the captain of the city wall nervously poked his head out, but less than two seconds later, he immediately pulled his head back in.
This wasn't because he was cautious; after all, he himself didn't believe that a two-second probe could reveal anything.
He did this purely out of fear, because before him, six guards had already tried to shoot arrows from the city wall to slightly hinder the enemy's attack.
But clearly, they all failed, and the guards on the city wall no longer had the courage to peek out and see what was happening outside.
Beside the captain of the guard lay such a corpse, its gleaming tail feathers very close to the archer whose eyes were still open, the arrow piercing directly into the archer's skull.
And this wasn't just one archer in this state; it was five other archers who fell on the city wall, all of whom were in the same state, even down to the fletching on the back of their arrows, reminding them that this feat was accomplished by one person.
That's why no soldiers on the city wall dared to observe, because they were all afraid that the enemy archer would shoot an arrow directly into their heads.
"Don't worry, as long as we hold the city gate, no matter how skilled the enemy archers are, they can't do anything to us. We just need to wait for the lord to arrive."
The captain of the guards began to encourage the guards on the city wall. Although no one wanted the enemy to enter the city, because once the enemy entered, burning, killing and looting would be commonplace.
More importantly, if the city wall were breached by the enemy under the command of the captain of the guard, he would probably lose his position as captain of the guard.
The captain of the guard was confident that he could stall for time and wait for the lord to arrive.
Because their city gates were made with great care, most of the exterior was inlaid with iron sheets, and the inside was filled with thick, century-old wood.
Even a knight, when facing this city gate, can only leave many marks on it. Even if the knight wanted to lift the city gate himself, he would have to taste the Spear of the guards who were stationed there first.
Once the lord arrives, the captain of the guards believes that these enemies will have no choice but to flee in panic, after all, the lord's power is even greater than that of those Knight Master.
However, they didn't need to wait for the lord to arrive. After all, the lord usually stayed in the castle inside the city. If knights attacked the city, he could just jump onto the city wall and they wouldn't have to do anything but wait to die.
There used to be a Knight Master guarding this side of the city wall, but a few days ago, that Knight Master was transferred away by someone from somewhere unknown.
Moreover, I've heard that all the knights in the entire River Valley Territory, except for the lord, have vanished without a trace. I suspect their current enemy is taking advantage of this opportunity to raid their River Valley Territory.
However, as long as the enemy doesn't fly directly onto the city wall to attack them, the captain of the guards is confident that they can definitely hold the city wall today.
Just as the captain of the guards was bending over on the city wall to relay orders, a very loud explosion rang in his ears.
Boom!!
He instinctively thought that perhaps his head was held too high, causing it to be struck by an arrow, and that the sound he heard was just the sound everyone hears before death.
After he instinctively trembled and fell to the ground, the captain of the guard touched his cheek and realized that he was not dead. However, the annoying buzzing sound kept ringing in his ears, making it impossible for him to hear any other sounds around him.
He paused for a moment before raising his head, panting heavily, trying to figure out what had happened. After a while, he noticed the changes around him.
The soldiers around them huddled below the city wall, muttering in fear. The sudden noise, along with the memory of the archers who had died earlier, had completely shattered their will to fight.
As the captain of the guards tried to get up, reassure the guards, and instruct them to prepare to go down and get their Spear to guard the city gate, he suddenly witnessed an unbelievable scene.
As mentioned earlier, although the lower half of the city wall is made of stone bricks and is relatively sturdy, the upper half, in many places, is made of wood.
This was something the lord specially approved in order to save time and cost in building the city walls.
In the lord's view, if his small town were attacked, either the existing city walls would be sufficient for defense, or he would have no choice but to surrender.
The last time Duke Theodore's army arrived, it was the same thing; he had to switch sides to save his life.
Lord Morris, having experienced the previous incident, clearly had no intention of learning from it, and didn't even plan to build the city walls any higher.
There was originally a wooden watchtower on the city wall, used to observe the distance and warn the city of approaching enemies.
Now, only ruins less than a meter from the city wall remain where the watchtower once stood; nothing else is left.
Everything on the wreckage vanished, including the guards who had been in the watchtower.
Just then, a nimble figure flipped over the city wall; it was Anna, who had no choice but to come up.
She still had to open the city gates, since their cannons could only blast the gates apart, but couldn't clear the way for their attack.
After Anna climbed onto the city wall, the guards were terrified. Some who could run scrambled to the other side of the wall, while others were frozen in place, unable to move.
The captain of the guards was obviously not spared either, so when Anna came up, she easily found the city gate's rope, rolled up the thick rope, and quickly pulled the city gate up.
Beneath the city gate, perhaps because the thick city walls blocked the transmission of sound, the guards here did not show much fear.
Their eyes revealed tension and excitement.
"Cheer up! Trust in our Spear. As long as the enemy isn't one of those knights who can lift six horses, we can win. The same goes for those Knight Attendant; there's no shortage of Knight Attendant who have been killed by Spear in this world."
"When those men come over with their shields, you poke through the gaps."
At this moment, a dozen or so people holding Spear were already standing at the city gate. Some were guards, and others were civilians who had been temporarily conscripted.
Three sharpened chevaux-de-frise were already placed in front of them, and civilians holding Spear were also seen inserting Spear through small holes on the side of the city gate.
The guards here were confident that unless a knight came and ruthlessly crushed their defenses, they could hold out against the enemy outside for a whole day.
The city wall slowly rose, which initially made the guards stationed there feel uneasy. After the entire wall was raised, their sense of unease intensified.
Before them lay the dark muzzles of more than a dozen guns. They were somewhat puzzled as to why the enemy wasn't advancing with shields.
But they soon found out. Just as they could make out the faces of those wielding special weapons, several thunderclaps rang out simultaneously in their ears, leaving the soldiers in the back and on the sides completely bewildered.
But those soldiers in the front ranks, raising their shields, felt with their own bodies why.
Their wooden shields were no match for the bullets; only the iron shields used by a few guards offered some protection.
Even so, their hands gripping the shields were numb from the shock, and their ears were filled with a buzzing sound.
Although such weapons were effective, they obviously could not break through the city gate in a short time, so a gray-robed believer brought the cannon to the city gate.
In the distance, guards were taking away the seriously wounded, replacing them with a new group wielding iron shields. To be fair, these guards' decision was absolutely correct, but...
When the massive, dark cannon muzzle was pointed at the city gate, the guards in front couldn't help but swallow hard to ease their tension and unease.
The next second, a roar rang out, and the soldiers and civilians at the city gate lost consciousness at the same moment, feeling a sharp pain in their front bodies, and then they were unable to straighten up.
Even those standing to the side were nearly knocked to the ground by the explosion.
They weren't Profession. Because of the mining incident, a group of Profession were taken away, and because the knights were conscripted, they couldn't go without their squires. As a result, there are now very few Profession left in the River Valley Territory.
These ordinary people are clearly powerless when faced with firearms.
