The apprentices listened to the rest of Harbos's lesson as though they had been pumped full of chicken blood.
But ten minutes into the class, the apprentices all turned vacant eyes toward people they knew.
None of them understood what Harbos was talking about.
Lai even turned to glance at Fran. Seeing that Fran had already grown so bored she was picking at her fingers, Lai finally relaxed.
"You don't understand either?" Lai asked softly.

Lai repeated herself even more quietly, while Fran looked at the prompts in her Panel.

To be honest, Fran hadn't understood at first either, but her proficiency had risen so quickly that Foundry Studies immediately entered the Beginner level.
Then she discovered that she could understand two out of every ten sentences, though she still had no grasp whatsoever of what Harbos meant. She couldn't figure it out no matter how hard she thought, so she simply decided to wait for her proficiency to rise further before listening again.
A master's lecture really did give absurdly high proficiency—it was climbing like mad. Without this class, she would probably have had to swing a hammer miserably to improve her Foundry Studies.
But she couldn't exactly tell Lai about this kind of improvement. Since she would understand more and more as time went on, she shouted, "Of course I don't understand!!"
Fran's voice was far louder than Lai had expected. Lai blanked out for a moment before realizing why she had been speaking quietly in the first place.
