Lifting a leg and setting it down again was a simple movement, but it was difficult for Chen Ge now. His head felt heavy and dizzy, and it was as if a great weight pressed down on him. Somewhere deep inside, a force was trying to drag him back.
Chen Ge had no idea what was lurking in the darkness, or whether there were ghosts nearby. Sometimes, not being able to see was a good thing. At least it kept him from panicking needlessly.
It took him several minutes to climb from the seventeenth floor to the eighteenth.
When Chen Ge finally reached the eighteenth floor, he nearly fell over.
"My body's cold, and my head's spinning."
Chen Ge was exhausted. The weariness came from his mind, as if he had been working for more than ten hours with his nerves constantly wound tight.
"I should be on the top floor now." Chen Ge held onto the wall. He still hadn't opened his eyes.
To be safe, he bent down and slowly ran both hands over the floor and walls, checking every corner.
He had survived by the skin of his teeth to reach the rooftop. He absolutely couldn't afford to make a mistake at the last moment.
As Chen Ge searched, a door opened downstairs. The sound rang out sharply in the silent stairwell.
The iron door swung open slowly, and two sets of footsteps sounded in the stairwell.
"Someone's coming up?" Chen Ge's heart leaped. "The door sounded like it was on the fourteenth or fifteenth floor. Did those neighbors catch up with me?"
The footsteps were hurried, rapidly approaching the rooftop. It was as if they were trying to force Chen Ge to open his eyes and end the task.
"The sound's reached the sixteenth floor."
