When Hidan gave no response, Kakuzu picked up the severed arm after finishing the "surgery" and examined it closely. Hidan sat crouched nearby, looking utterly devastated. He showed no interest even in the arm that had been removed from his own body.
Neither of them had followed the woman into the house to "eat." After all, a mere touch had left Hidan in this state. Inside, they would have even less room to dodge. Going in would be no different from courting death.
Of course, they hadn't fled blindly toward the outskirts like idiots, either. They had already tried that. Until they broke this genjutsu, they couldn't go anywhere.
Kakuzu bitterly regretted it now. He should have realized sooner that a group of helpless "ordinary people" appearing in a place like this was a trap in itself.
In truth, neither of them had intended to kill everyone in the village. That would have been too much trouble. To take control quickly and obtain information, they had simply picked two people at random to kill as a warning to the others. The villagers had looked terrified, and everything they did matched the reactions of ordinary civilians.
Afterward, however, they kept encountering all sorts of bizarre traps. Given their strength, those traps had no effect whatsoever, but their sheer number was an endless nuisance.
The turning point came when Hidan kicked away a child who had been shooting glass marbles at them with a slingshot. After that, everything blew up.
The eyes of the villagers who had been running over to stop the child instantly reddened. Together with the villagers who had been watching nearby, they grabbed hoes or kitchen knives and charged at the two of them.
