Power Progression
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Martial Soul awakening — Innate Full Soul Power | 112 | Awakens twin martial souls at six. His plant martial soul is identified by the narration as a relatively weak Blue Silver King, though he presents it as Blue Silver Grass. Conceals the Clear Sky Hammer to avoid being kept in the sect. |
| Soul Master — first soul ring | 118 | Successfully absorbs a roughly 400-year Mandrill Snake ring despite Yu Xiaogang’s initial concerns. Begins the poison-and-control cultivation path. |
| Rank 30 Soul Grandmaster | 127 128 | Reaches Rank 30 a year before entering Shrek Academy. Deliberately postpones obtaining his third ring so he can seek the Man Faced Demon Spider and Eight Spider Lances. |
| Rank 34 Soul Elder | 135 | Absorbs a Man Faced Demon Spider ring over 2,000 years old. His accumulated Soul Power raises him directly to Rank 34; also obtains the Eight Spider Lances. |
| Rank 35 Soul Elder | 142 164 | Documented before the Skywater match and during his challenge against the Rank 51 Gu Chen. |
| Rank 39 Soul Elder — bottleneck | 180 185 | Has two yellow and one purple ring. Poison cultivation has damaged his plant martial soul, preventing further advancement; he refuses to begin adding rings to the Clear Sky Hammer. |
| Rank 40 threshold — bottleneck overcome | 190 | Crystal Blood Dragon Ginseng nourishes his martial soul and breaks the bottleneck. Its underlying Blue Silver King quality rises from approximately 30,000 to 40,000 years. |
| Soul Ancestor — fourth soul ring | 193 201 | Absorbs a Flourishing Sun Flower ring close to 7,000 years old, gaining healing. His grass returns to blue, but neutralizing its poison sharply weakens his first three skills. Ring configuration becomes two yellow and two purple. |
| Purple Demon Eyes — peak Subtle stage | 235 | Spiritual Power reaches the peak Soul King level, allowing him to force back Hu Liena. Has not reached the Mustard Seed Realm. |
| Rank 50 | 288 | Reaches Rank 50 after completing his first Sea God Island test and receiving its reward. |
| Rank 52.5 Soul King | 288 | Absorbs a 23,000-year God-given ring, evolving his plant martial soul into the Blue Silver King. |
| Soul Sage | 288 | Completes his trials over three and a half years. Reported rewards include 6,000 additional years for every ring, four Soul Power ranks, and two God-given rings. |
| Rank 92 Titled Douluo | 338 | Detonates eight rings, each over 50,000 years old, to produce a hammer strike reaching Rank 99 power; subsequently detonates his ninth ten-thousand-year ring. |
| Rank 99 High Priest | 349 | Burns and sacrifices himself to open the god-test gate. The released energy reaches the realm of gods. |
Background / History
Previous Life and Rebirth
Tang San remembers a life in which he founded the Tang Sect, became a god, and helped destroy the Spirit Hall Empire. He initially expects reincarnation to let the Shrek Seven Devils repeat their victories while correcting their regrets 92 98 150 258.
Instead, he is born into the Clear Sky Sect as Tang Hao’s son by a different mother. Ah Yin’s marriage to Qian Xunji becomes a central grievance: Tang San believes Qian Xunji has stolen the family and advantages that should have belonged to him 98 118 129 151.
Childhood in the Clear Sky Sect
The elders’ faction blames Tang Hao and Tang Yuehua for the sect’s troubles and redirects its anger toward Tang San. Disciples repeatedly bruise him and insult his legitimacy, while Tang Hao spends his days drinking and neglects him. Tang Xiao provides his only consistent familial warmth 93 97.
Tang San nevertheless cares for Tang Hao for several years. After awakening his martial souls, he hides the Clear Sky Hammer because revealing it would prevent him from leaving. Tang Xiao supplies money and cultivation resources and arranges his escort to Notting City 112 113 118.
Notting Academy and the Shrek Reunion
At Notting Academy, Tang San reunites with Xiao Wu and again chooses Yu Xiaogang as his master. Confident in his previous-life experience, he follows the same poison-and-control path despite briefly questioning whether healing would better suit his plant martial soul 115 117.
The Clear Sky Sect’s resources allow him to devote more time to cultivation than in his previous life. He waits at Rank 30 until joining Shrek Academy, where all seven reincarnated companions reunite. He then obtains the Man Faced Demon Spider ring and Eight Spider Lances as planned 127 128 135.
Qian Renchuan and the Loss of His Advantages
Tang San’s expected repeat victory collapses during the confrontation with Skywater Academy. After protecting an injured Xiao Wu, he unleashes the Eight Spider Lances and Clear Sky Hammer against Shui Binger. Qian Renchuan subsequently takes the external soul bone and absorbs it himself 144 150.
Qian Renchuan’s use of Tang Sect techniques unsettles Tang San. He initially wonders whether his rival is a reincarnated Tang Sect disciple, then tells Tang Hao that he and the other Shrek Seven Devils are reincarnators. Father and son renew their plans to rescue Tang Chen and destroy Spirit Hall 150 151.
Gu Chen’s Challenge
At Heaven Dou Royal Academy, Gu Chen declares Tang San unworthy of Xiao Wu. Tang San’s control skills, hidden weapon, and Clear Sky Hammer fail to overcome him. Tang Hao intervenes and proposes a five-year settlement, during which Tang San is forbidden from touching Xiao Wu 163 164 165.
Gu Chen enforces the agreement through threats and physical intimidation. Tang San struggles to contain his anger while Xiao Wu complies under pressure to prevent further harm to him. Even after repairing his martial soul, Tang San remains instinctively wary of Gu Chen appearing when he embraces her 167 181 201.
Cultivation Crisis and Tournament Defeats
Ah Yin identifies poison cultivation as the cause of Tang San’s Rank 39 bottleneck. His changing appearance and previous-life God-given abilities had already provided warning signs, but he had continued trusting the old path. With Ah Yin’s assistance unavailable, Tang Hao obtains Crystal Blood Dragon Ginseng to restore his cultivation 185 186 190.
The remedy and a life/light-aligned fourth ring allow Tang San to become a Soul Ancestor, but weaken his existing poison-based skills. His return does not restore his former dominance: Qian Renchuan’s Blue Silver Emperor suppresses his plant martial soul during the Promotion Tournament 193 201 207.
In Spirit City, Tang San promises to defeat Qian Renchuan with one hammer strike. Instead, he is beaten and forced to kowtow before Pope Palace until his team surrenders. Heaven Dou Second Team later loses the tournament to Skywater Academy 226 228 240.
Xiao Wu’s Sacrifice and the City of Slaughter
Xiao Wu sacrifices herself to save Tang San, Tang Hao, and Tang Xiao, but Qian Renchuan receives her ring and soul bone. Tang San is beaten unconscious during the sacrifice; Gu Chen takes her rabbit body and later buries it 243 244 251.
Tang San enters the City of Slaughter earlier than intended. There, he rejects Qian Renchuan’s claim to be the real Tang San from his previous life. Qian Renchuan controls Xiao Wu’s soul body and uses her Eight-Stage Throw against him; Tang San refuses to retaliate because he cannot bear to hurt her 260 274 275 277.
Tang Hao rescues him and flees. Unable to return and complete his hundred victories, Tang San loses his chance to obtain the Divine Slaughter’s Domain and turns to Sea God Island as his remaining route to power 276 277.
Sea God Island and Final Sacrifice
Tang San receives the Top Level Seven Tests, rather than the god-inheritance assessment he had hoped for. His foreknowledge nevertheless helps him and his companions complete their trials, and he eventually becomes Sea God Island’s High Priest 282 288 338.
He later reveals his reincarnation to Bo Saixi while accusing Spirit Hall of harming Tang Chen and framing him. Qian Renxue’s subsequent killing of Bo Saixi removes another potential protector 324 330.
By Rank 92, Tang San has become subordinate to Bibi Dong. He fights using ring detonation and a blood-based hidden-weapon attack, but Qian Renchuan defeats him. Later, as a Rank 99 High Priest, he burns himself to open the god-test gate; neither Qian Renchuan nor Qian Renxue arrives before his death 338 340 349.
Appearance
- Hair: Initially brown; gradually turns light blue through nourishment and the Mysterious Heaven Skill, then deepens in color during awakening 93 112.
- Face: Initially ordinary. Poison-aligned rings progressively weaken his martial soul’s beautifying effect; God-given rings and the later Blue Silver King evolution transform him into a handsome young man 127 185 288.
- Clothing: Wears durable, plain Clear Sky Sect clothing, a Shrek mask during arena combat, and later Heaven Dou Royal Academy’s elaborate uniform 115 144 167.
- Former external soul bone: Eight purple, poisonous spider legs emerge from his back when the Eight Spider Lances are activated 144.
Personality
Tang San is affectionate and intensely protective toward Xiao Wu. He treats her wounds during combat, risks retaliation for her sake, and later accepts her controlled attacks rather than injure her soul body 144 164 275.
His confidence rests heavily on previous-life knowledge. He expects familiar teachers, soul rings, resources, and tactics to produce familiar victories, making him slow to recognize that his altered martial soul cannot safely follow the same cultivation path 112 117 127 185.
Pride and resentment repeatedly influence his decisions. He plans revenge against Spirit Hall, marks Qian Renchuan for death, and regards insults to his relationship with Xiao Wu as a “Path to Death.” During the Promotion Tournament, his desire to publicly display his repaired martial soul takes priority over his original hammer strategy 100 164 207.
Repeated defeats leave him withdrawn and increasingly desperate. His faith in an inevitable triumphant second life gives way to frustration over lost resources, damaged relationships, and dependence on stronger patrons 150 186 193 338.
Abilities & Skills
Twin Martial Souls
- Blue Silver Grass/Blue Silver King: Used primarily for battlefield control. The awakening narration identifies its underlying quality as Blue Silver King, although it is repeatedly called Blue Silver Grass 112.
- Clear Sky Hammer: Provides heavy close-range offense. Remains without soul rings throughout the documented tournament battles 226 238.
- Limit: Qian Renchuan’s Blue Silver Emperor prevents Tang San from manifesting his weaker plant martial soul 207.
Plant Soul Skills
- Entanglement: Restrains opponents with vines 164 180.
- Parasitism: Listed among his first three soul skills 180.
- Spider Web Restraint: Used against Gu Chen, whose defenses withstand it 164.
- Fourth-ring healing: Consumes Soul Power to heal injuries; Tang San compares it to Nine Heart Begonia 193.
- Cultivation conflict: The healing ring neutralizes much of his poison, drastically reducing the effectiveness of his first three skills 193.
Tang Sect Arts
- Mysterious Heaven Skill: Cultivation method and inner force; used to expel cold from Xiao Wu’s body 93 144.
- Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track: Evasive movement used against Zhu Zhuqing and Qian Renchuan 129 207.
- Purple Demon Eyes: Enhanced observation and spiritual offense; reaches peak Subtle stage with peak Soul King Spiritual Power 117 235.
- Hidden-weapon techniques: Deploys crossbows, sleeve arrows, and concealed projectiles. His standard weapons fail against Qian Renchuan’s defenses 164 243.
- Blood-based attack: At Rank 92, channels his ninth ring’s detonation energy into a transparent droplet formed from his own blood 338.
Clear Sky Sect Techniques
- Haotian Nine Wonders: Uses the Pierce Word Art against Gu Chen; his knowledge of the Brake Word Art helps substantiate his reincarnation account 151 165.
- Disorder Splitting Wind Hammer: Builds force through coordinated, successive hammer swings. With the Eight Spider Lances reinforcing him, he can perform only forty strikes during the Skywater match 144.
- Wild Cloak Dance: Combines spinning movement with hammer-force accumulation. Gu Chen’s Bone Prison interrupts it, while Qian Renchuan’s vines can be smashed during the buildup 193 207 227.
- Great Sumeru Hammer / Ring Detonation: Has learned the inherited method by Tang Hao’s final battle. Later detonates his own rings to generate power far above his Rank 92 cultivation 300 338.
Eight Spider Lances
- Origin: External soul bone obtained from the Man Faced Demon Spider 135.
- Applications: Poisonous attacks and physical reinforcement 144.
- Loss: Taken by Qian Renchuan, who regrows the lances in pale blue under his own martial soul’s influence 150.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Twenty-Four Bridges on a Moonlit Night — Storage soul tool given by Yu Xiaogang; preferred over his smaller Clear Sky Sect storage tool for carrying hidden weapons 127.
- Godly Zhuge Crossbow — Used against Qian Renchuan; described as effective against Soul Masters below Soul King rank 243.
- Silent Sleeve Arrow — Concealed weapon suited to opponents below Rank 30 243.
- Hidden Sand Shoots Shadow — Used against Gu Chen and Qian Renchuan 164 243.
- Crystal Blood Dragon Ginseng — Consumed to nourish his damaged martial soul and overcome Rank 39 stagnation; also greatly increases his vitality 190 237.
- Torso soul bone — Its skill is activated when he throws his enlarged Clear Sky Hammer during the Rank 92 battle 338.
- Golden High Priest’s scepter — Three meters long, with a spear-like tip and diamond-shaped golden gemstone; used during his final sacrifice 349.
Relationships
- Xiao Wu — Wife from his previous life and beloved partner after rebirth. Their reunion anchors his hopes for his second life; her sacrifice and controlled soul body become central sources of grief 115 243 275.
- Tang Hao — Father. Initially neglects Tang San and dismisses him for apparently lacking the Clear Sky Hammer; becomes protective after learning of his twin martial souls 118 133 276.
- Tang Xiao — Uncle and childhood protector. Treats Tang San as his own son and later confronts Yu Xiaogang over the damage to his cultivation 93 220 244.
- Ah Yin — Mother in his previous life, not his current one. Identifies his cultivation mistake but does not provide the life-force treatment he hopes to receive 129 185 186.
- Tang Chen — Great-grandfather whom Tang San hopes to rescue. His presumed death intensifies Tang San’s accusations against Spirit Hall 151 324.
- Yu Xiaogang — Master in both lives. Tang San initially trusts his theories unquestioningly; the poison-path failure destroys that confidence, and Yu Xiaogang’s final accusations further damage his reputation 115 117 185 248.
- Ning Rongrong and Zhu Zhuqing — Reincarnated companions whose romantic admiration fades as his defeats and helplessness undermine their image of him 98 193.
- Dai Mubai, Oscar, and Ma Hongjun — Fellow Shrek Seven Devils and previous-life companions. Initially rely on Tang San to resolve unexpected crises 128 150.
- Qian Xunji — Enemy whom Tang San blames for his altered family circumstances, Tang Hao’s maiming, and Spirit Hall’s dominance 129 151.
- Qian Renchuan — Rival who claims to be the real previous-life Tang San. Takes his Eight Spider Lances, suppresses his plant martial soul, and repeatedly defeats him 150 207 274 277.
- Gu Chen — Rival for Xiao Wu who defeats and intimidates him, then takes Xiao Wu’s rabbit body after her sacrifice 165 167 244.
- Bo Saixi — Sea God Island authority whom he attempts to persuade by revealing his reincarnation and accusing Spirit Hall 288 324.
- Bibi Dong — Rival reincarnator who obtains the Sea God inheritance assessment; Tang San later describes himself as having become her slave 288 338.
