Background

Lu Ran is a transmigrator who spent his early life in severe poverty. Before awakening his Martial Soul, he endured hunger, cold, and isolation while holding onto the belief that awakening would change his life. His known background was otherwise sparse: investigations established only that he had been adopted. 1 6 91

His awakening revealed Innate Full Soul Power and the Small World Martial Soul. Zhang Lexuan, who had encountered and saved him near the Star Dou Great Forest, brought him to Shrek Academy, where Yan Shaozhe, Mu En, and the Sea God Pavilion recognized the unusual potential of his ability. 1 2 3

Rather than killing soul beasts for rings, Lu Ran can bring them into his Small World, heal and contract them, and share in their growth. His first contract, the injured Rock Crystal Dragon, established this method and immediately raised his soul power. 5 6

Lu Ran is practical, observant, and unusually mature for his age. He makes calculated decisions about cultivation, resources, and alliances, from selecting soul beasts suited to his world to negotiating with the Ice Emperor using Ten Thousand Year Profound Ice Marrow. 2 51 52

His early hardship makes him receptive to kindness and protective of others in similar circumstances. He aided Jiang Nannan’s search for medicine for her mother without expecting repayment, and he repeatedly chooses to contract or shelter soul beasts rather than kill them. 15 124 125

He is also ambitious on a continental scale. Lu Ran intends to expand the Small World into a refuge for soul beasts and seeks alternatives to the conventional practice of killing soul beasts for Soul Rings. 152

Lu Ran ultimately articulated his intention to reshape the relationship between humans and soul beasts.
