Background / History
Shrek Academy is the long-established academy at the center of Shrek City. Its prestige rests on nearly ten thousand years of history, its association with Tang San, and a record of one thousand consecutive tournament championships prior to its defeat by the Sun Moon Royal Soul Engineer Academy. Its historical resources, location near the Star Dou Great Forest, and connections across the original three Douluo kingdoms enabled it to attract exceptional students for generations 7 23 49.
The academy’s true center is the Sea God Pavilion on Sea God Island. The pavilion houses its highest leadership, Inner Court resources, historical facilities, and the Golden Ancient Tree. Statues of the Golden Triangle and the first-generation Shrek Seven Monsters stand within its halls 47 72.
Under Pavilion Master Mu En, Shrek continued prioritizing exceptional students who could become long-term members of the institution. After the Reserve Team’s tournament defeat, Mu En personally placed the seven members beneath the Golden Tree for intensive training and began investing more heavily in selected successors 72 79 90.
Mu En later traded Huo Yuhao to the Body Sect in exchange for cultivation resources, reflecting the academy’s willingness to make strategic personnel decisions for its future 79. Before his death, he instructed the academy to promote the Soul Engineering Department and appoint a Level 10 Soul Engineer as his successor, but Xuan Zi inherited the Sea God Pavilion amid worsening instability 98.
Organization and Education
| Division / Institution | Function and position |
|---|---|
| Outer Court | Handles the general student body. Its library, teachers, and resources are substantially inferior to those of the Inner Court 23. |
| Inner Court | The academy’s true inner circle; receives superior resources and is regarded as the path to becoming a genuine member of Shrek 23. |
| Sea God Pavilion | Governing center and stronghold of the academy’s senior leadership, located on Sea God Island 47 72. |
| Martial Soul Department | Holds the academy’s dominant institutional authority and most of its resources 31. |
| Soul Engineering Department | Nominally significant in staffing, but materially subordinate to the Martial Soul Department and behind Sun Moon Empire institutions in Soul Tool research 31. |
| Shrek Monitoring Group | A student organization deployed on dangerous missions under the rhetoric of continental responsibility; members receive equipment but no mission rewards 42. |
Admissions and assessments
Admission consists of four stages. The final stage is a three-person coordinated combat assessment, where applicants are judged on teamwork, use of Martial Soul advantages, and endurance against senior students rather than solely on defeating them 7.
First-year students must subsequently pass the Freshman Assessment to become official academy members. Successful students may receive Core Disciple status or temporary Core Disciple treatment based on their performance 15 22.
Class assignment system
Second-year students are assigned by combat category:
| Class | Assigned types |
|---|---|
| Class One | Assault and Control |
| Class Two | Defense and Agility Assault |
| Class Three | Support |
| Class Four | Food, Healing, and other special types |
Huo Yuhao criticizes this system for grouping students by broad combat roles rather than the differing needs of individual Martial Souls, particularly the divide between Beast and Tool Martial Souls 22 23.
Core Disciples
Core Disciple status grants access to academy resources and privileges, including invitations to the Treasure Appraisal Fair. Huo Yuhao, Wang Dong, Xiao Xiao, Dai Huabin, Ning Tian, and several other freshmen receive the status after the Freshman Assessment 22 34.
Facilities and Resources
- Outer Court Library — Contains general cultivation and Soul Master material, though relatively few records of secret methods or special arts 9 23.
- Beast Arena — A costly facility where students undertake promotion assessments against captive soul beasts; Huo Yuhao considers it poor preparation for real wilderness combat 31.
- Sea God Pavilion — The academy’s senior headquarters, connected to the Golden Ancient Tree and equipped with spatial methods accumulated over generations 47 72.
- Golden Tree / Golden Ancient Tree — The foundation of Sea God Island and a source of dense spiritual energy and cultivation benefits 72 98.
- Treasure Gathering Pavilion access — Core Disciples may attend its Treasure Appraisal Fair and receive purchase privileges 34.
- Shrek City — Functions as the academy’s surrounding city and economic base; enrollment periods bring substantial trade and tax revenue 31.
Shrek Monitoring Group
The Shrek Monitoring Group recruits Inner Court and Reserve Team students for missions framed as protecting the continent. Xuan Zi recruits the Reserve Team before the Continental Advanced Soul Master Academy Soul Fighting Tournament, using appeals to Shrek’s honor and responsibility 42.
The group’s standardized masks and uniforms are conspicuous and offer protection only against attacks below three rings. Huo Yuhao regards this equipment as inadequate for the danger of its missions and notes the group’s high casualty rate 42.
According to Huo Yuhao’s assessment, the Monitoring Group’s operations reinforce Shrek Academy’s political influence: missions earn the academy donations and prestige, while the sacrifices of lower-ranked members support the cultivation of elite disciples 42.
Major Events
Continental Advanced Soul Master Academy Soul Fighting Tournament
Shrek Academy enters the tournament as defending champion and the continent’s “Number One Academy,” with a reputation for winning every championship for the previous millennium 48 49.
Because much of the Main Team is injured after the Monitoring Group mission, the Reserve Team fights the early rounds. They defeat Heaven Spirit Advanced Soul Master Academy and advance through the round robin, but Shrek ultimately loses to the Sun Moon Royal Soul Engineer Academy in the semifinals 50 58 63 68 71.
The defeat ends Shrek’s championship run and damages its public prestige. Wang Yan publicly accepts blame to protect the students and preserve the academy’s reputation 70 71.
Mu En’s death
Mu En’s health declines after repeated interventions to defend Shrek and stabilize its standing. He dies as Dragon God Douluo, transforming into a white dragon and leaving a blessing over Sea God Island and the Sea God Pavilion 98.
His death removes Shrek’s strongest contemporary protector and leaves Xuan Zi with responsibility for the academy’s future 98.
Decline and rivalry with the Body Sect
After Mu En’s death, Shrek’s influence declines further. The Body Sect forms alliances with other academies and the Nine Treasures Glazed Tile Sect to establish six Soul Tool Academies, directly challenging Shrek’s position in Soul Tool research 140.
Xuan Zi later negotiates with Du Busi for an alliance against the Sun Moon Empire, agreeing that Shrek should bear the initial burden of the war effort 142.
Holy Spirit Church attack
While Xuan Zi is away from Shrek City, the Holy Spirit Church launches a coordinated attack using controlled civilians carrying Soul Tool bombs, Resentful Spirits, and plagues. The assault devastates Shrek City and overwhelms its defenders 143.
The attackers also infiltrate Sea God Pavilion using internal structural information obtained through Jing Hongchen. Mu En’s lingering soul awakens to defend the city and drive the attackers away, but Ma Xiaotao is abducted 143 144.
More than four hundred thousand of Shrek City’s two million permanent residents die during the attack. Graduates return to support reconstruction, demonstrating the academy’s long-standing influence across the three empires 144.
Isolation
Shrek’s defeats, repeated attacks, and Sea God Pavilion restructuring erode the reverence it once commanded. It is eventually excluded from the Douluo Council, while Shrek City loses most permanent residents and becomes an ungoverned, nearly abandoned city 151 186.
By Chapter 196, the academy’s gates and grounds are dilapidated, Sea God Lake is empty, and fewer than one hundred Shrek remnants remain in the Outer Court 196.

- Tang Sect — A long-associated sect with deep historical ties to Shrek, though it later loses its final foothold at the academy 7 142.
