Background
Trunks grew up in an Earth devastated by Androids 17 and 18, living with his mother Bulma. During an Android attack, Son Gohan knocked him unconscious to keep him from joining the fight. When Trunks awoke, he found Gohan grievously wounded and apparently lifeless, then buried him believing he had died. The mistake left him guilty and fiercely determined to become stronger. 2
After Gohan survived, Trunks trained under him. They recovered Vegeta's gravity-equipped spaceship, located Kami's Lookout, and spent a year and a half in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. Their training made them strong enough to destroy the Androids and end the crisis in their world. 3 69
Trunks later sought to restore his Saiyan tail despite knowing it could become a weakness. Dende agreed to help him regrow it, allowing him to research the Great Ape transformation and eventually retain his reason while transformed. 19 31
By the time he reached physical age sixteen, Trunks had become an accomplished swordsman and achieved Super Saiyan 2. He continued training after Earth was stabilized rather than treating the Androids' defeat as an endpoint. 57 70
Appearance
Trunks is a purple-haired Saiyan-human hybrid whose appearance develops from that of a young survivor into a lean, handsome swordsman. At age sixteen, he is described as resembling the Trunks of the original timeline, with a long sword and scabbard carried across his back. 57
- Purple hair, including the fur of his regrown Saiyan tail. 91 369
- Frequently wears lightweight blue-and-white battle suits modified from Frieza Force combat gear. 4
- Carries the Sword of Heroes, which he can smoothly return to its sheath after throwing it into the air. 57
- His Super Saiyan 4 form retains purple hair and has a sharp, sword-like presence rather than Gohan's overwhelming dominance. 91 112
- In Super Saiyan 4 Limit Break, his hair and fur become rose-red and his aura turns crimson-gold. 335
- In Super Saiyan 5, his hair, fur, tail, and eyebrows become white while his pupils turn red. 336
Personality
Trunks is earnest, curious, and intensely self-critical. His belief that he had buried Gohan alive haunted him, but the guilt became motivation to train rather than a reason to give up. 2
He looks up to Gohan as an elder brother and teacher, readily follows difficult training plans, and remains eager to learn about Saiyan transformations, divine power, and his father Vegeta's history. 3 8 368
Despite his gentle nature outside battle, Trunks can be ruthless toward enemies. He killed the wounded Galaxy Thugs Zangya and Gokua after catching them during the Bojack conflict. 28 In battle, he combines determination with adaptability, using deception, illusions, copied techniques, and unconventional transformations against stronger opponents. 299 335 397
Abilities & Skills
Saiyan Transformations
Trunks possesses a broad Super Saiyan progression, from Super Saiyan through Super Saiyan 5. His Super Saiyan 4 is especially associated with his sword-like fighting spirit and direct offensive style. 57 91 112 336
- Great Ape transformation requires Saiyan blood, sufficient physical power, a tail or strong Blutz Waves, and mastery of the transformation method. 369
- He can retain his sanity as a Great Ape and communicate normally in that state. 31 32
- Super Saiyan 4 grants immense physical power and endurance; he used it to contend with Broly and later opponents. 111 112
- Super Saiyan 4 Limit Break increases his power further, but it was insufficient against Jass and Mirage. 187 320
- Super Saiyan 5 rapidly restored his injuries against Cooler, though he could not yet sustain or fully control the form. 336 338
Swordsmanship
Trunks is a natural swordsman whose skill exceeds Gohan's. He wields the Sword of Heroes with practiced control and incorporates sword strikes into his high-speed combat style. 57
- Eliminated Frieza's soldiers with a single sword technique upon arriving in the past timeline. 67
- Defeated the Golden Great Ape Android by cutting it apart with one strike in Super Saiyan 4 Limit Break. 298
- Uses swordsmanship alongside hand-to-hand combat rather than relying on the weapon exclusively. 57 320
Yardrat and Energy Techniques
Trunks has studied techniques beyond conventional Saiyan transformations, including methods associated with Planet Yardrat. 62
- Forced Spirit Fission — extracted the mixed energies sustaining the Golden Great Ape Android, reducing it to an empty shell before destroying the remains. 299
- Gigantification — studied the technique on Planet Yardrat with Gohan. 62
- Instant Transmission and illusions — used rapid movement and multiple false bodies to confuse Cooler during their tournament match. 335
- 10x Kamehameha — launched the technique against Mirage, though Mirage's magical energy wave overwhelmed it. 320
- Purification — resisted Cumber's evil aura and its mind-altering effects through the technique Gohan had taught him. 397 399
- Calamity Hands — copied Cumber's giant evil-energy hand technique after recognizing its ki-construction principles. 397
Equipment
- Sword of Heroes — Trunks's primary sword, carried in a scabbard on his back. 57
- Modified battle suits — highly elastic protective combat gear supplied by Bulma; the suits remain intact even during Great Ape transformations. 4 32
- Enforcement Squad capsule — contains a time-and-space-capable spaceship, a Destruction Beast sensor, Senzu Beans, supplies, and additional battle suits. 370
- Communication Orb — used to contact Gohan after encountering Cumber and the black-robed figure. 399
Relationships
- Bulma — his mother and principal source of support; she supplies equipment, conducts research, and works with him even in ruined timelines. 2 58 118
- Vegeta — his father. Trunks grew up wanting to know him and was nervous about meeting him; Vegeta eventually acknowledged that Trunks had done well. 3 58 62
- Son Gohan — mentor, elder-brother figure, and closest training partner. Gohan's survival and guidance shape Trunks's path as a fighter. 2 8 69
- Broly — a powerful opponent Trunks fights on Vampa. Their battle forces Trunks to use Super Saiyan 4 and helps draw out Broly's latent Super Saiyan power. 110 111 112
- Komai — a frequent visitor to Capsule Corp whose feelings for Trunks are implied. 58
- Bruce — Trunks's son, who seeks to join the World Martial Arts Tournament despite his young age. 285
- Future Trunks — a time-traveling counterpart from another devastated timeline; the two are treated as distinct individuals within the story's branching timelines. 67 118 279

Time travel introduces multiple versions of Trunks. One arrives in the past timeline to destroy Frieza and King Cold, deliver Heart Virus Medicine to Son Goku, and warn the Z Fighters about the Android future. 67 68
After returning to his own ruined world, this Future Trunks trains for two years in a Gravity Chamber built by Bulma, destroys Androids 17 and 18, kills Cell, gains Ultimate power through Old Kai, prevents Majin Buu's revival, restores Dende as Earth's Guardian, and later lives peacefully with Mai. 118
A later Future Trunks joins Gohan's Enforcement Squad and investigates abnormal planets connected by massive chains, leading into the Prison Planet incident. 441
