Just as Iwagakure's war machine began quietly gearing up against Konoha, the area along the northeastern border of the Land of Fire, where it met the Land of Grass, remained temporarily calm before the storm.

The forests here were not as lush and verdant as those in the heart of the Land of Fire. Instead, they carried more of the bleakness of the northern lands.

Konoha's border outpost stood at the mouth of a valley on high ground, backed by steep cliffs and difficult to attack.

The camp had been built from sturdy logs and stone, with a defensive barrier and numerous traps arranged around its perimeter.

It was afternoon. Sunlight filtered through sparse clouds and fell upon the Gunbai banner fluttering in the center of the camp.

The shinobi in the camp were going about their daily patrols, training, and guard duties.

The atmosphere was hardly relaxed, but it was still far from tense.

The outpost's commanding officer, the jōnin Mimura Yome, had just finished inspecting a forward observation post and returned to the main camp. She was a woman with neat black hair and delicate features, tempered by a soldier's resolve.

Mimura Yome removed her cloak bearing Konoha's symbol, revealing a green shinobi flak jacket beneath. A slender Ninja Blade hung at her waist.

"Lady Yome," a Chunin came forward to report. "Today's routine patrols are complete. We found no abnormalities along the border. The Third Squad repaired three traps to the east that had been triggered by wild animals."

"Thanks for your effort." Mimura Yome nodded and surveyed the camp.

Shinobi could be seen practicing Taijutsu in pairs and threes or training in Shuriken Throwing. Some were inspecting their ninja tools, while others read the latest intelligence briefs. Everything seemed orderly.
