Moonlight shone bright and the stars were sparse above that lake. Within a hundred li of its shores, aside from the rippling light on the water, the insects chirping across the lakeside plains, and the few nocturnal beasts that emerged by night and hid by day, not a single human figure could be seen—much less any devils.
