Shadowkhan Investigation

While returning from a mission, Minato encounters the Shadowkhan in Konoha Forest. He defeats individual shadow ninjas with Flying Thunder God and Rasengan, but discovers that they dissolve into smoke, endlessly re-form from shadows, and possess no chakra. 3 After meeting Uncle and Patrick Star, he gathers intelligence on Shendu and sends a toad summon to report the threat to Hiruzen. 4

Fog Demon Incident

Minato returns to Konoha to confront the Fog Demon responsible for killings and toxic mist. He discovers the attacker is Jack, a child with abnormal strength, speed, regeneration, and fog-based abilities. 5 Sage Mode allows him to expose Jack and strike her with Sage Art: Rasengan, but her Maria the Ripper bypasses his defenses, leaving him cursed and injured before she retreats. 5 6

Minato reports the Hidden Organization to Konoha’s leadership after learning of Jack’s claimed affiliation from Uncle. 7

Ox Talisman Escort Mission

Minato leads Obito, Kakashi, and Rin in escorting merchant Dayuan when Shadowkhan ambush the group for cargo containing the Ox Talisman. He uses shadow clones and Rasengan to protect Dayuan, but the talisman empowers a Shadowkhan beyond his ability to confront directly. 8 9

Although forced to retreat, Minato marks the talisman bearer with Flying Thunder God. The mark leads him to infer that the Shadowkhan’s base lies in another dimension, later identified by Uncle as the Shadow Kingdom. 9 10 His injuries from the encounter keep him out of Konoha’s subsequent talisman-search cooperation. 12

Battle Against Shendu

During Shendu’s invasion of Konoha, Minato is initially assigned to escort Kushina to a shelter because of her status as the Nine-Tails jinchūriki. After ensuring her safety, he joins the battle. 48

Minato and Yellow Sponge rescue Hiruzen after Shendu uses the Sheep Talisman to separate the Hokage’s soul from his body. 49 He then works with Yellow Sponge and Blue Octopus to delay Shendu, striking the demon with Rasengan and ultimately using Flying Thunder God Guiding Thunder to remove Shendu’s ten incoming fireballs from Konoha’s skies. 50
