The Annular Amplifier Belt was like a sleeping metal serpent, coiled silently around the Cocoon of Finality. Across the surface of the structure, whose diameter was measured in astronomical units, billions of etched grooves flowed at once with a dim violet glow, like the pulsing veins of some living creature.
There was no sound.
There should have been no sound at all in a vacuum, but standing on the Observation Deck inside the amplifier belt's inner ring, Oswald Schneider kept feeling as if he could hear something.
That sound did not enter through his ears. It scraped directly against his bones.
He flipped the data pad in his hand over. The screen displayed the amplifier belt's energy supply curve—unstable, exceeding the theoretical design limit, yet strangely, no change could be seen from the outside.
"Still looking at the data?"
The voice came from behind him.
Oswald did not turn around.
Footsteps approached at an unhurried pace, each step landing squarely in the center of the Observation Deck's alloy floor—the way this person walked was the same as the way he spoke, always carrying himself with a perfectly "centered" air.
The Immaculate Child stopped beside him.
The Memorian leader, who regarded himself as Fuli, was relatively stable today. Only the edges of his body flickered occasionally, like a transparent film stirred by the wind. His gaze passed over the Observation Deck's transparent barrier and settled on the pitch-black cocoon in the distance.
"That intruder has already been sent inside."
The Immaculate Child's tone was very calm, as if he were reporting a routine task that had already been completed.
"You mean your prisoner was thrown by you into that cocoon, when even you don't know what's happening inside it, and then you came to tell me about it, and that's that?"
