Lingsha turned her head and saw a girl waving her arms vigorously at her.
Her skin had been baked dark by the sun, and her long hair, braided into several plaits, swung behind her. She looked like a piece of fruit thoroughly steeped in sunlight.
The brightly colored outfit she wore would probably have been deemed "far too ostentatious" by Xianzhou standards of beauty, yet on her, it carried a perfectly natural sense of ease.
"Hello, hello! I'm Mualani, a guide from the Flowing Springs Tribe!" The girl brought a gust of wind with her as she hurried over. "I-I'll be in charge of receiving you here! Welcome to Natlan!"
She started laughing before she had even finished speaking.
Lingsha nodded. Fuyuan poked half its head out of the incense burner and sniffed in Mualani's direction, then happily circled her ankles twice.
"Oh, what is this? It's so cute!" Mualani crouched down and gently touched the rabbit-like creature with her fingers.
"Can I hold it?" She raised her head and looked at Lingsha expectantly.
"You may. Its name is Fuyuan." Lingsha's voice was neither loud nor soft, carrying the unhurried cadence distinctive to the Vidyadhara of the Xianzhou. "It is a smoke beast I refined from an incense burner. It does not bite."
Fuyuan twitched an ear.
"...For the most part, it does not."
Mualani laughed aloud. After holding Fuyuan and rubbing her cheek against it for a while, she stood and patted nonexistent dust off her
