Background / History
Family and Isolation
Dugu Bo lives as a suspicious, reclusive poison master. Dugu Yan is the last surviving hope of the Dugu family, and he directs the guilt he feels toward his son and daughter-in-law into protecting and doting on her. Before Lin Chuan’s arrival, only Dugu Yan knows of his sanctuary at the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well 33 34.
Despite his expertise with toxins, poison has spread through his marrow and internal organs over decades. He previously sought help from a Nine Hearts Begonia soul master, but even that healing specialist could not cure him 35 36.
Agreement with Lin Chuan
Lin Chuan abducts Dugu Yan to force a meeting. Dugu Bo attempts to rescue her with controlled soul power, then attacks Lin Chuan mentally. He stops escalating when Lin Chuan makes clear that a stronger clash would endanger Dugu Yan 32 33.
After accurately identifying his symptoms, Lin Chuan offers to cure both grandfather and granddaughter in exchange for three years of personal service. He also promises Dugu Yan lifelong safety. Dugu Bo accepts, weighing the loss of freedom against his declining health and his granddaughter’s future 33 34.
The Harvested Garden
Dugu Bo allows Lin Chuan to remain at the sanctuary while he seeks the soul bones required for treatment. His departure also serves as a test of Lin Chuan’s claims. Returning to find the youth missing and nearly the entire herb garden harvested, he assumes he has been deceived and becomes furious 35 36.
He subsequently finds water stains and searches the well, concluding that Lin Chuan may have fallen in and died. Lin Chuan’s unharmed return leaves him resentful, but the youth’s growing ability to withstand his pressure makes intimidation increasingly ineffective 37 38.
Beginning Treatment
Dugu Bo eventually secures Ten-Thousand-Year Soul Bones for himself and Dugu Yan; their source is not revealed. After both absorb them, Lin Chuan supplies detoxification pills and promises to return in half a month. By this point, Dugu Bo has accepted the service agreement and no longer resents following Lin Chuan as intensely 40.
Appearance
Dugu Bo appears as a gaunt, sickly-looking middle-aged man whose intimidating aura contrasts with his weakened appearance 33.
- Hair: Ink-green, waist-length, and disheveled 33.
- Eyes: Sunken sockets and cold, emerald-green, snake-like eyes 33 40.
- Face: Hollow cheeks, deeply purple lips, and still-discernible handsome features 33.
- Clothing and bearing: Wears a simple robe and stands rigidly “like a javelin” 33.
Personality
Dugu Bo is taciturn, suspicious, and decisive. He answers threats with immediate force rather than prolonged discussion, and his pride in his unmatched poison expertise makes him sensitive to challenges. Even after agreeing to treatment, he tests Lin Chuan and attempts to strengthen his bargaining position 33 35 36.
His granddaughter is the clear exception to his coldness. His gaze softens toward her, and he restrains himself whenever fighting might injure her. He values freedom enough to repeatedly reject Martial Soul Hall’s invitations, but accepts a restrictive agreement when it offers a way to save them both 33 34 38.
He is also cautious about unfamiliar substances. A previous attempt to harvest the sanctuary’s herbs nearly caused severe internal injury; thereafter, he largely confines himself to cultivating medicinal plants he understands 35 46.
Abilities & Skills
Poison Expertise
Dugu Bo has spent his life working with toxins and regards his mastery as his greatest source of pride 35.
- Can immediately detect attempts to poison him 35.
- Cannot cure the deeply embedded poison in his own body 35.
- His poison expertise does not extend to comprehensive knowledge of the well’s exotic herbs 35.
Mental Attacks and Perception
Dugu Bo can attack through spiritual pressure and eye contact 33.
- Creates a vivid sensation of a cyan serpent coiling around and crushing Lin Chuan’s heart; Lin Chuan breaks free 33.
- Scans his sanctuary with spiritual power, but cannot detect Lin Chuan beneath the well because it blocks external spiritual probing 36.
- Detects the unusual divine-power fluctuations accompanying Lin Chuan’s inheritance 40.
Soul-Power Control and Movement
His Titled Douluo abilities support flight, suppression, and precise protection 33 40.
- Directs crushing pressure at Lin Chuan while deliberately sparing Dugu Yan 33.
- Suspends Dugu Yan gently in midair during the attempted rescue 33.
- Shields her from the well’s disruptive energy 40.
- Can endure the boundary at the well’s center for only half an hour 35.
Poison Condition and Treatment
| Aspect | Details |
|---|---|
| Accumulation | Toxins have infiltrated his marrow and internal organs over decades 35. |
| Rain-related symptoms | Overcast or rainy weather causes an intensifying numb itch in his ribs 33. |
| Nightly symptoms | Around the third watch, needle-like pain strikes his crown and soles, followed by at least half an hour of full-body spasms 33. |
| Combat limitation | Circulating soul power accelerates the poison’s spread, making exertion increasingly dangerous 35 38. |
| Treatment method | Medicinal pills extract toxins, which must then be forced into an absorbed soul bone 35 40. |
| Dosage | Three pills per dose, at most twice daily: once in the morning and once in the afternoon 40. |
| Timing and limits | Effects begin after roughly half an incense stick; pain is unavoidable. The pills remove surface toxins but cannot clear all remaining poison 40. |
Equipment / Items
- Ten-Thousand-Year Soul Bone — Absorbed as part of the detoxification procedure; its anatomical type is unspecified 40.
- Detoxification pills — Supplied by Lin Chuan in a bottle containing half a month’s treatment 40.
- Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well sanctuary — Includes a bamboo house, medicinal garden, and concealed approach with traps and confusing tunnels 34 35.
Relationships
- Dugu Yan — Granddaughter and the Dugu family’s last remaining hope. Her safety is his overriding priority and the decisive factor in accepting Lin Chuan’s terms 33 34.
- Lin Chuan — Initially an enemy holding his granddaughter hostage; later his treatment provider and the recipient of a three-year service agreement. Their cooperation remains transactional before Dugu Bo gradually accepts the youth’s strength 33 34 38 40.
- Chrysanthemum Pass — Enemy from earlier conflicts; the two regard each other with hostility 38.
- Martial Soul Hall — Repeatedly rejected its recruitment offers to preserve his freedom. Serving its Holy Son personally does not constitute a stated decision to join the organization 38 40.
