The weather in Konoha was lovely today. The sun was shining, and the air, free from industrial pollution, was fresh. It was early morning, and after breakfast, members of the Uchiha Clan were leaving their homes for work with the Police Force. As a result, the streets were busy.
Yet the passersby acted as if they didn't see the mother and son walking along. Some even rolled their eyes at them. It was a far cry from the cheerful scene in the Naruto manga, where passersby greeted Uchiha Sasuke as he walked down the street. Whispers rose around them from time to time.
"No way! How dare a mongrel with such impure blood and only One-Tomoe stroll openly around the Uchiha Clan Compound? What do they take the Uchiha Clan for?"
"Just what you'd expect from an outsider commoner. They have no manners at all."
Uchiha Cheng had long since grown used to the gossip around him. He could only say that hot-blooded manga were all lies. The Uchiha passersby acted this way solely because his bloodline was inferior.
He was born into a One-Tomoe branch family of the Uchiha Clan. His father, Uchiha Kenji, was an incompetent man who had barely awakened a One-Tomoe Sharingan in his twenties. His mother was an outsider, too. Although her name was Uchiha Mika, she had taken the Uchiha surname after marrying into the clan, following tradition, and was widely discriminated against by the Uchiha.
Although the Uchiha Clan had no Main Family and branch family like the Hyuga Clan, it had still divided itself into direct and branch families based on the number of tomoe in their Sharingan.
The birth of a Three-Tomoe clansman signified a pure bloodline, earning them direct-family status. Their powerful abilities let them control most of the clan's resources and authority. Those born with Two Tomoe or One-Tomoe Sharingan, meanwhile, were called branch-family members.
In the Uchiha Clan, the direct family held supreme status, while the Two-Tomoe branch family ranked far above the One-Tomoe branch family. The One-Tomoe branch family held the lowest status, leaving its members on the fringes of the clan.
But Sasuke was the chief's own son. Even if his talent hadn't stood out early on, he still belonged to the Three-Tomoe direct family. People were eager to curry favor with him. Who would ever roll their eyes at him?
And so, in Uchiha Sasuke's memories, the Uchiha Clan was so wonderful, so united and loving.
It could only be said that the strong were surrounded by good people, while the weak were surrounded by bad ones. And memories could be deceptive.
The Sharingan was a Kekkei Genkai that awakened through intense emotional stimulation and could continue to evolve. After suffering the pain of losing a loved one, it could evolve into the Mangekyō Sharingan. After studying the Sharingan, the Second Hokage had even called the Uchiha a clan of love.
Yet the Uchiha Clan in the original story had gone through three great Ninja Wars, losing countless loved ones, and still hadn't produced a single Mangekyō Sharingan. That showed just how emotionally detached the Uchiha Clan was.
After the Night of the Uchiha Massacre, Danzo and Uchiha Obito joined forces to loot the Uchiha Clan from top to bottom, yet still couldn't find a single Mangekyō Sharingan. The Uchiha's only two Mangekyō belonged to Uchiha Itachi and Uchiha Shisui, who both rejected the Uchiha way.
All that could be said was that humans were never a species that could be confined to "love" by something as trivial as an innate Kekkei Genkai.
Ignoring the passersby's dirty looks, the mother and son walked along in silence.
Twenty minutes later, Uchiha Cheng felt that his body couldn't go on. He quickly asked his mother to take him home.
When they returned to their familiar courtyard, an uninvited guest was already waiting at the door.
