Background / History
Orochimaru was a renowned Konoha genius and Sarutobi Hiruzen’s most prized student. After he became a jōnin, Tsunade asked him to serve as Nawaki’s teacher—a decision that provoked disagreement from Jiraiya, who considered himself the better choice 74.
Following the Second Shinobi World War, Orochimaru increasingly withdrew into secret research. He continued teaching Ye Ning but otherwise disappeared for extended periods. At this stage, Ye Ning found that his intimidating exterior concealed genuine warmth, and that his advice on developing ninjutsu was practical and well suited to Ye Ning’s needs 27 28.
Danzō’s imprisonment removed an influence that had encouraged Orochimaru’s disturbing experiments. Without that pressure, Orochimaru became less reckless in his research. Ye Ning subsequently broadened his interests beyond immortality by offering clues about chakra, dōjutsu, and the origins of the shinobi world 92 132 151.
Appearance
Orochimaru has pale, fair features and a cold, feminine bearing 24 92.
- Eyes: Yellow, snake-like pupils 28.
- Characteristic gesture: Frequently flicks out his tongue to lick his lips or the corner of his mouth 24 92 151.
- Clothing: Initially appears in a Konoha jōnin uniform; wears a white laboratory coat while conducting experiments 24 92.
- Voice: Raspy, sometimes described as magnetic 28 169.
- Sage Mode feature: Pale white eyeshadow appears when he enters the state during combat 209.
Personality
Orochimaru values immortality more than political office. Although Ye Ning allows that he might retain some interest in becoming Hokage, the position is an afterthought compared with his pursuit of eternal life 28.
His curiosity makes him particularly responsive to new research opportunities. Hints about the Rinnegan, Tenseigan, and Ōtsutsuki can draw him into prolonged laboratory work or persuade him to accompany Ye Ning on missions. This enthusiasm becomes so consuming that he declines invitations from Tsunade and Sakumo to drink together 171 173 203 205.
Despite his sinister manner, he is not uniformly cold-hearted. He treats Ye Ning well, patiently welcomes Sasori when offered a new perspective on immortality, and accepts Shika’s distrust without anger. When Ye Ning collapses after fighting Pain, Orochimaru immediately supports him and brings him back to Konoha 27 92 222.
He also enjoys unsettling others. After returning from Kumogakure, he deliberately delays identifying his captive to amuse himself at Ye Ning and Tsunade’s confusion 132.
Abilities & Skills
Sage Art
Orochimaru learns the White Snake Sage’s Sage Art at Ryūchi Cave on Ye Ning’s recommendation 132.
- Enhanced combat power: Credits Sage Art with greatly increasing his strength 132.
- Precision application: Uses a Sage Technique to sever part of the Eight-Tails’ tentacle during the Kumogakure operation 132.
- Sage Technique: Great Snake Lightning: Dissipates Yagura’s Tailed Beast Bomb after it breaks through Triple Rashomon 209.
Snake Techniques and Reconnaissance
Orochimaru uses snakes for both combat and intelligence gathering 92 129.
- Hidden Shadow Snake Hands: Releases numerous snakes from his sleeves to restrain the injured Blue B before the jinchūriki can draw on the Eight-Tails’ power 129.
- Scouting: Waits for a small white snake to return before infiltrating Kumogakure 129.
- Base surveillance: A white snake notices Ye Ning’s approaching group before Orochimaru emerges from his concealed entrance 92.
Defensive Summoning
- Triple Rashomon: Summons three gates between himself and an incoming Tailed Beast Bomb 209.
- Limit: He does not expect the gates alone to stop the attack; he follows them with Great Snake Lightning to finish neutralizing it 209.
Sealing Arts
Orochimaru’s ambition to learn every ninjutsu includes studying sealing techniques 130.
- Seal release: Finds a method to undo Blue B’s seal and releases the Eight-Tails 130.
- Containment: Seals the unconscious Two-Tails jinchūriki, Yukiya, inside a scroll for transport 132.
- Tailed Beast extraction: Accepts Ye Ning’s assignment to extract the Five-Tails from Han and conduct research before using it in negotiations with Iwagakure 151.
Research and Invention
Orochimaru’s work supports Ye Ning’s power development and Konoha’s growing military strength 92 197 198.
| Research field | Documented result or limitation |
|---|---|
| Kekkei Tōta | Reaches a conclusion on Ye Ning’s request to research the simultaneous fusion of three chakra natures 92. |
| Genjutsu Pills | Develops pills that obstruct chakra use, weaken the body, and induce sleep. He uses two on Blue B to overcome resistance 130. |
| Hashirama cells | Reports that the research is complete; Ye Ning elects to undergo transplantation first. Later plans include transplanting the cells into Shisui to prevent Mangekyō-related blindness 172 198. |
| Sharingan evolution device | Successfully induces Shisui’s Mangekyō Sharingan awakening. The procedure causes severe pain and convulsions, nearly prompting its termination 197. |
| Byakugan and Tenseigan | Initial experiments fail. Orochimaru identifies Byakugan purity and the absence of Ōtsutsuki cells as possible obstacles, then develops a proposed method involving Ōtsutsuki chakra and the Byakugan 173 228 275. |
| Caged Bird Seal | Works on deciphering the seal alongside his Tenseigan and immortality research; no completed result is stated 203. |
| Shikotsumyaku | Studies Kimimaro’s bone manipulation and the rapid healing of wounds caused by extracting bones through flesh 227. |
Impure World Reincarnation
Orochimaru develops and progressively refines the Impure World Reincarnation Jutsu 213 275.
- Early limitation: By the Kirigakure expedition, he can perform the technique, but estimates that a summoned Hashirama would possess only one or two tenths of his living strength 213.
- Refinement: Later declares the technique fully perfected and proposes resurrecting Hashirama to test the Tenseigan 275.
- Wartime use: Revives Hashirama and Tobirama, who stop Pain and retrieve Nagato’s Rinnegan 285.
Intelligence and Battle Analysis
- Enemy intelligence: Knows Kumogakure’s high-ranking personnel and recognizes the opportunity created by its weakened internal defenses 129.
- Perception: Detects a strong scent of blood from an island while approaching the Hōzuki Clan’s territory 205.
- Dōjutsu analysis: Records Shisui’s eye techniques and identifies Takeminakata’s ability to absorb ninjutsu and strengthen its defense 198.
- Combat observation: Analyzes much of the Six Paths of Pain’s ability set while watching Ye Ning fight, recording attraction, repulsion, summoning, and absorption capabilities 219.
- Teaching: Kimimaro’s daily exposure to his theoretical knowledge helps him answer every question correctly in the Chūnin Exam’s written test 251.
Equipment / Weapons / Items

Story Role / Major Arcs
Kumogakure Infiltration
As commander on the Kumogakure front, Orochimaru proposes releasing the Eight-Tails to destabilize the enemy village. Tsunade initially considers the operation too dangerous, while Ye Ning supports it and supplies an Explosion Release Scroll 126 127 132.
Orochimaru infiltrates the weakened village, restrains the wounded Blue B, forces him to swallow two Genjutsu Pills, and releases the Eight-Tails. When the hidden Two-Tails jinchūriki, Yukiya, intervenes, Orochimaru detonates the scroll to distract him. The Eight-Tails knocks Yukiya unconscious, allowing Orochimaru to capture him and obtain a tentacle segment 129 130 132.
He returns with both prizes, exceeding Ye Ning’s request for Tailed Beast chakra. Yukiya’s capture gives Konoha leverage for demanding a ceasefire, reparations, resources, and other concessions from Kumogakure 131 132 134.
Konoha’s Research Program
Ye Ning brings Han to Orochimaru’s laboratory and offers access to the Five-Tails for research. Further revelations about chakra and the Ōtsutsuki intensify Orochimaru’s interest in the deeper origins of the shinobi world 151 170 171.
His later work produces a completed Hashirama-cell research program and a functioning Sharingan evolution device. Shisui’s successful awakening establishes that the device can support Ye Ning’s proposed Susanoo brigade, despite the procedure’s serious distress 172 197 198.
Kirigakure Expedition
Ye Ning persuades Orochimaru to leave his experiments by suggesting a connection between Shikotsumyaku and Kaguya Ōtsutsuki. Ye Ning also intends to use his persuasive abilities to help bring promising young shinobi out of Kirigakure 203 205.
During the expedition, Orochimaru neutralizes Yagura’s Tailed Beast Bomb, encounters Kimimaro, and records the Six Paths of Pain’s abilities. After Ye Ning exhausts himself fighting Pain, Orochimaru carries him back to Konoha with the recruited group 209 215 219 222.
Tenseigan Research and the Fourth Shinobi World War
Ye Ning’s capture of lunar Ōtsutsuki members supplies the material Orochimaru had lacked for his Tenseigan experiments. Orochimaru eagerly proposes combining their chakra with the Hyūga Clan’s Byakugan 275.
During the war, Orochimaru remains in Konoha, where Tsunade considers his presence sufficient protection for Naruto. He resurrects Hashirama and Tobirama, retrieves Nagato’s Rinnegan through their intervention, and refrains from transplanting the eyes into himself. He then attempts to persuade the former Hokage to return the Rinnegan to Madara as part of the preparations for stronger future enemies 277 285.
