Zhang Yuanqing's heart sank. Instinctively, he assumed Catherine intended to hold a "welcome ceremony" for him, just like the one they had used to corrupt Emma.

That made no sense. Given the negative energy I displayed last time, and given that I'm an Illusionist, there's no reason to hold a corruption ritual at all. Zhang Yuanqing felt both confused and worried, but he put on an expression of curiosity and skepticism.

"Meet a god? Heh. If you want to use a higher-order being to corrupt and control me, then I refuse."

Evil Professions also feared corruption and madness. Their own obsessions could twist their personalities, but would not affect their intelligence. However, severe corruption could indeed lower one's intelligence.

Zhang Yuanqing said this to probe Catherine.

If her goal was to make him undergo the ritual, he needed to come up with a reasonable excuse to refuse. Or he could take the risk, relying on the fact that he was merely a clone, and endure the "brainwashing" of a higher-order being.

"You don't need it!" Catherine said with a smile. "Your evil thoughts are like a bottomless swamp. It looks calm on the surface, but it can contaminate an entire lake."

After teasing him, she turned serious. "Tomorrow night's battle may draw the attention of higher-order sovereigns, perhaps even demigod-level powerhouses. We need to add another layer of insurance for ourselves."

"Insurance?" Zhang Yuanqing allowed a trace of anticipation to show on his stern face.

Yet inwardly, he grew increasingly grim, because he had no reason to refuse. Who would turn down a trump card that could save their life? Refusing would only make him suspicious.
