Background / History

The Sea God is one of the dozen or so major deities of the God Realm. From a blue-and-gold temple, he secretly observes Yu Mingxiao and Di Tian's battle against the Deep Sea Demonic Whale King. He had intended to preserve the whale king as a divine-trial opponent, but Yu Mingxiao kills it and attempts to absorb its nearly million-year spirit ring as his eighth ring. Impressed by Yu Mingxiao's aptitude, the Sea God decides that he should become his successor 104.

He issues a divine oracle for Sea God Island to locate Yu Mingxiao. Bo Saixi and Sea Dragon Douluo subsequently bring Yu Mingxiao to the island, where he is offered the highest-grade golden Sea God Divine Trial 106 107 108.

Yu Mingxiao refuses the trial and breaks free of its blue light. The Sea God's divine consciousness then appears to confront him. Although angered by the refusal, he ultimately accepts Yu Mingxiao's proposal to let his friends—or potentially his children—undertake the trials and seek a suitable successor instead 108 109.

Despite Yu Mingxiao's refusal to inherit his godhood, the Sea God continues to reward and test him through the divine trials. After Yu Mingxiao clears the first trial, the Sea God grants a five-thousand-year increase to all of his spirit rings and provides a God-bestowed Spirit Ring. He observes with surprise as Yu Mingxiao rapidly absorbs it beyond the million-year threshold 112 113.

For the final trial, the Sea God personally manifests at Sea God Island's eastern shore as a thousand-foot giant and challenges Yu Mingxiao to endure against him for the duration of an incense stick. Yu Mingxiao instead counters his techniques, wounds him with Eternal Return to Void, and forces him to concede 123 124.

He can be wrathful and desperate when challenged, but is pragmatic enough to negotiate after Yu Mingxiao refuses the divine trial. He also recognizes Yu Mingxiao's ability in battle, even when the final confrontation ends in his own defeat 109 123 124.
