According to myth,

King Minos ordered the brilliant architect Daedalus to build a vast underground Labyrinth to hide the monster with the bull's head.

The Labyrinth was ingeniously designed, its passages twisting and crossing so intricately that anyone who entered struggled to find the exit.

Deep within the Labyrinth lurked the monster Minotaur, who fed on prisoners and the young men and women sent as tribute from Athens.

Every year, the Athenians were forced to send seven pairs of young men and women to Crete to appease Minos's anger.

In that tangled maze, one careless step could leave a person lost and trapped until death—or devoured by the monster.

"Thaumas, I'm a little scared." Theseus held the sharp sword Ariadne had given him and gripped the thread.

Before entering the Labyrinth, Theseus had tied one end of the thread tightly to the entrance, then tossed the ball of thread deeper inside and followed the direction it led.

It was Ariadne's love and help for Theseus, and a guide as well.

But one careless step could still lead Theseus to a place from which he would never return.

Following that thread, Theseus would encounter a demon by nature, a man-eating Beast, a monster with a bull's head.

Theseus buried his fear deep in his heart. Carrying his sense of justice, he advanced into the depths of the Labyrinth of despair. Forward, forward, ever forward.

At last, he said to Thaumas with difficulty:

"Thaumas, do you think we might die? Maybe we'll wander this Labyrinth until we perish. Maybe the bull-headed monster will eat us. Perhaps a hero shouldn't say this, but I can't ignore my fear."

A few torches burned along the long corridors. That sole source of light eased Theseus's heart somewhat; at least they had not been plunged into
