Background

Thaumas was originally the adopted son of a member of Spiral Hall, a Chinese magecraft organization. He was wholly incompatible with both Chinese Thought Magecraft and Western Magecraft Foundations; even an implanted Magic Crest shattered on contact. Unable to access any known magical system, he believed himself rejected by the world. 1

His life changed through the black Monument within his soul. The Monument records heroic deeds, returns his soul to itself when his body dies, and can engrave him upon the Throne of Heroes after he reaches the required rank and experiences true death. It brought him to Greece during the Age of Gods, where he sought Chiron's instruction and declared his intention to become a hero. 1

After five years under Chiron, Thaumas left Pelion with Jason. His unknown future attracted Athena's attention: even her wisdom could observe his past but could not see what awaited him. 6 Hera later claimed him as her favored believer, while Athena, Hephaestus, Hecate, Nyx, and other gods became entangled in his path. 9 19 25

His first major legend came from the Nemean Lion. Ordered to sever the lion's head before Heracles while preserving Heracles's Labor, Thaumas used Chiron's lyre to lull the beast into an eternal dream. He gave its hide to Heracles so that the latter could complete the First Labor, receiving Hydra venom in exchange. 16 18

Thaumas is a handsome young man with black hair and blue eyes. After five years of training under Chiron, he is described as sixteen years old. 1

Personality

Thaumas initially pursues heroism for a practical and selfish reason: he wants to leave behind a legend, gain immortality through the Throne of Heroes, and no longer fear death. 1 Over time, he defines heroism less as glory and more as living honestly as himself and bringing change or miracles to others. 19

He is cautious around gods, aware that a careless lie or insult can be fatal. His honesty is often strategic, but he is also capable of compassion toward people, monsters, and even divine figures who have hurt him. 8 18 25 He prefers bargains, persuasion, and unconventional solutions over direct confrontation, repeatedly rejecting forced either-or choices in favor of a “third path.” 50 185 186

Thaumas is not naturally battle-minded. He admits that he has relied heavily on borrowed power and lacks the instincts of dedicated warriors, though repeated battles gradually improve his combat ability. 108 146 190 His greatest strength is persistence: when Ares and Aphrodite's power drove him toward madness, he resisted through his purified soul, unresolved promises, and the Monument's intervention. 108
