Background / History

Following the loss of the Greek gods’ true Machine God bodies in the Second Divine War, Athena persisted as a conceptual deity. Foreseeing the coming Third Divine War against the Gigantes, she proposed cultivating exceptional humans into new gods capable of supporting Olympus. Hera reluctantly accepted the plan after insisting that she personally inspect Jason, the proposed candidate. 5 6

Athena first encountered Thaumas while secretly observing Jason’s journey. Her Authority of Wisdom could read Thaumas’s past but not his future, an anomaly that immediately fascinated her. She attempted to recruit him away from Hera by offering to guide him toward heroism; although he refused, Athena became determined to test and cultivate him. 6

She guided Jason through a conditional oracle, promised to construct the Argo, and repeatedly placed Thaumas in dangerous trials designed to force growth rather than provide effortless divine aid. Athena regarded his ability to disrupt her calculations and defy fixed outcomes as proof that he could create genuine miracles. 7 15 16 19

After Thaumas challenged her over Medusa’s fate, Athena accepted his attack rather than evade it. His Arrow of Wisdom’s Punishment shattered the Aegis and wounded her hand, compelling her to apologize to Stheno and Euryale for disgracing Wisdom. 58 60

Her interest in heroes is intense and often playful to the point of cruelty. Thaumas’s unreadable future turns him into both a prized prospect and an entertaining challenge; she writes “scripts” for him, watches for his response, and openly competes with Hera for influence over him. 10 13 15 49
