Background / History

Cui Xijun is the third daughter of Cui Zhenru, head of the Cui Family. Prior to her direct introduction, she is known in the Capital City as the Cui Family's most beautiful daughter, a woman skilled in poetry, literature, and zither performance. 18

When she plans to visit Xiangguo Temple, Cui Xijun recognizes that the Liu Family's gifted carriage and the sudden unavailability of every other Cui Family carriage are too convenient to be coincidence. She orders Steward Cheng to investigate the matter, but proceeds with the journey rather than delay it. 39

Her convoy is ambushed en route. Trapped within the sealed carriage with Hong Ling, Cui Xijun arms herself with a Skirt-Pressing Blade and attempts to mislead the attackers by claiming that the Liu Family will soon arrive. After Chen Ye opens the carriage, she quickly concludes that the assault was targeted rather than ordinary banditry. 40 42

After returning to the Cui Mansion, Cui Xijun personally directs the response. She identifies the bribed stable deputy steward, orders a secret internal investigation, seeks accountability from the Grand Court of Revision, and traces the incident to the Liu Family and Heavy Martial Pavilion. Rather than pursue immediate revenge, she uses the attack to force political concessions from rival clans. 45

The resulting pressure forces the Liu Family to cede property and two water-transport berths. The Emperor later praises Cui Xijun as a “talented woman with a blade hidden in her skirt,” greatly raising her public reputation. 45

Her annual pure talk gathering subsequently draws young members of the Capital's prominent families. Concerned that growing attendance has undermined its original character, she restricts the guest list and holds the gathering aboard the Cui Family's pleasure boat, Untethered Garden. There she leads exchanges on literature and martial cultivation. 103 104 105

Appearance

Cui Xijun is fair-skinned with red lips, a graceful bearing, and an already refined figure. Though described as not necessarily the most striking Cui daughter, she is notably poised and elegant. 38

Personality

Cui Xijun remains composed under immediate threat. During the ambush, she neither panics nor loses her bearing, instead preparing an armed response and attempting to buy time through deception. 42

She is analytical and politically pragmatic. Once evidence points toward the Liu Family, she judges that destroying them outright would be unrealistic and destabilizing; she instead turns the attempted assassination into leverage for the Cui Family. 45

Despite her caution, Cui Xijun is willing to invest heavily in exceptional talent. She investigates Chen Ye before recruiting him, supports his military-examination candidacy, and entrusts him with her personal Hunyi Saber Technique when ordinary methods would not be enough. 47 62 63

She takes care to preserve the refined atmosphere of her gatherings. When aristocratic guests speak casually of sending retainers and illegitimate sons into danger in their place, she dislikes the subject and redirects the conversation. She also notices when Chen Ye is excluded because of his background and tries to introduce him to other guests. 103 104

Cui Xijun advances her temple visit to avoid Liu Zhao, but finds herself forced into the Liu Family's carriage after the Cui estate's other carriages are deliberately made unavailable. Her convoy is attacked by desperadoes, leaving her stranded with Hong Ling until Chen Ye intervenes. 38 39 42

Investigation and Liu Family Conflict

Returning immediately to the Cui Mansion, Cui Xijun organizes the investigation into the ambush. She exposes the stable steward's bribery, identifies Liu Family involvement, and converts the incident into political pressure that damages the Liu Family's standing. 45

Recruiting Chen Ye

Recognizing Chen Ye as both her rescuer and a potentially useful talent, Cui Xijun has Steward Cheng investigate him. Satisfied that his background presents no immediate threat, she brings him into her household as a personal attendant rather than immediately granting him formal Cui Family status. 46 47 48

Supporting Chen Ye's Advancement

After Cui Yingtang discovers Chen Ye's extraordinary mastery of the Return to Origin Art, Cui Xijun works with Cui Zhenru to create a path for him to become eligible for formal service: the Capital City Martial Examination. She secures his candidacy, gives him the Hunyi Saber Technique from her dowry, and later grants him retainer status after he places first. 61 62 63 77

When Chen Ye reports killing an examiner, Cui Xijun warns him of the possible political consequences. Realizing she has underestimated his cultivation and prospects, she decides to seek her father's help in suppressing the matter. 75

Pure Talk Gathering and Danfeng Expedition

Cui Xijun holds her annual gathering aboard Untethered Garden, placing Chen Ye in charge of supplies and guard patrols. She attempts to introduce him to prospective marriage partners, but the women receive him coldly because of his commoner origins. Afterward, she offers him their calling cards and explains that marriage could give a scholar and retainer without an established lineage the support needed to advance in the capital. Chen Ye declines and instead asks for a chance to establish merit in Danfeng Prefecture. Cui Xijun later recommends him for the Cui Family's expedition there. 103 104 105 119

Chen Ye's Return and Farewell

After the Danfeng campaign, Cui Xijun welcomes Chen Ye back to the Cui Mansion as the Marquis of Fei and arranges a banquet for him. Seeing him overpower Cui Yingtang in a test of strength leads her to reassess his abilities and treat him with greater respect. When Chen Ye later receives an imperial appointment in Qinghe Prefecture and visits the Cui Family before leaving, Cui Xijun watches him with complicated feelings that remain unspoken. 223 224 233
